Resiliency a Must or Not?

Different countries around the world experiences natural and even manmade

disasters. Everybody have experienced hurricanes, typhoons, floods, fires, and

earthquakes. Calamities which made people lost their homes, jobs, properties, and

even their love ones. Calamities often cause so much destruction. Can we still

manage to face one?

Disaster is very alarming when you hear it. It causes so much destruction to

agriculture and infrastructure. When people are not prepared and ready, there is a

possibility that they would experience catastrophe. We also experience starvation

because of such and even deprivation because of its after effect. Outbreak of

diseases and even terrorism were also frightening, leaving people around the world,

praying and wanting for a disaster-free country.

Just like what happened in India, the Gujarat earthquake which was

considered one of the worst disaster all over the world were many people died, got

injured, and homes were destroyed.

Our country -Philippines also experienced different calamities. Typhoon

Yolanda is one of the world’s deadliest and strongest typhoon that happened in

Visayas. Many people died also and billions worth of agriculture and infrastructure

was destroyed. Typhoon Lawin also hit Cagayan Valley were many people was

affected. Our municipality of Gattaran also lost many agriculture and even homes.

Our place here in Capissayan Norte also had lots of casualties.

What you will do to your mother earth, will also be done to you. We’ve heard

this saying especially to the campaigns of the Department of Environment and

Natural Resources. (DENR). Throwing your garbage everywhere can cause

pollution and also we can get illness or diseases from these garbages we’ve thrown.

What is good in throwing your garbage everywhere? Instead of throwing, why don’t

you recycle it. In that case we can lessen the amount of garbage in our surroundings

and we can make money out of it.

Loss of many can be prevented if only we have enough knowledge or we

have this knowledge but we don’t apply it. People nowadays lack discipline and self-

control. Discipline starts within ourselves. But where is it now? As what our school

principal always say “Having no big D- Discipline is a person who do not know

nothing”.

We should practice disciplining ourselves. Practice makes perfect and if we

learn to practice what we learned, obey rules to help protect our mother earth then

we can probably say that we are disciplined. Discipline in the sense that we become

responsible for our garbage, we become aware of the effects of pollution, we

become knowledgeable of our actions.

People often say this to encourage someone to keep on learning on what to

do before, during and after a calamity. We must know the importance of practice in

our daily life so that we can use this when a calamity strikes or in times of

emergency.

Preparedness is another way we can combat natural disasters. While we may

never know for sure if a calamity strikes, it is the responsibility of every individual and

family to be prepared. .Enough knowledge saves us from danger. If we have

knowledge to do what is right and wrong, we can be save ourselves and others from

danger. Our knowledge leads us to our safety. If only we learn to accept information

not just through our heads but also within our hearts. Our government designed
resilience strategies, our community organized teams and even imposed trainings.

Yes, training is a must so that every member of the family will be equipped with

needed knowledge to prevent too much casualties when danger arise.

It is also important that we should be alert. Alert not just when there is a

calamity but also in our everyday life. We should have the few simple basic steps to

do. Always have to prepare your flashlight, extra batteries, first aid kit, emergency

whistle, bottled water and can goods. Evacuate to the nearest evacuation area or

safety places. Bring with you also the important documents and don’t forget to switch

off the main fuse of your house to prevent fires.

During calamity one must not panic because it would just cause more tension

to the people. They are tense because of what is happening and that would be the

time that their mind would be block, they don’t know what to do and that could cause

them to danger. When a calamity strikes, panic is their enemy.

We may lose hope after a disaster, but let us together build our strength to

face life at its best. Start a new life. Learn from our mistake. Many times we’ve failed

and we cannot let this to happen anymore. We’ve lost many of our love ones and our

homes, and that is enough. We’ve come too far. We should not give up on life, even

when it is hard we should stay strong for the sake of our self, the others, and also for

our country.

We cannot really stop disaster from casting around , but we can stop others

by destroying our nature. Start within ourselves. We should be fully prepared and

skilled. Just remember that whatever happens, even when it is a calamity or a

disaster, don’t forget to pray and ask God for your protection. Are you prepared? The

future is on our hands.
