What is a computer virus?
 Small programs which move from one computer to another, and
cause damage and disruption in computers. They are harmful
software

How are viruses spread?


 Inserting an infected disk in a computer (pendrive, CD/DVD,
memory card etc)
 Opening infected files attached to an email
 Sharing infected files on a network
 Downloading infected files from the internet (websites etc)

How can we prevent our computers from contracting
a virus?

Do not open emails if you do not who is sending them


Do not open files if you do not know what they are
(especially from the internet)
Be careful which website you visit and do not give any
username and passwords to others.

What is an Anti-Virus Software?

Program which protects your computer against viruses


They scan all your files and folders to check for viruses
If a virus is detected, the Anti Virus software removes it
from your computer
It is used as a safety program to safeguard your
computer
Using an Anti-Virus Software
Usually, these software are setup to do automatic
scans (for example everyday at 6pm)

This means, it will check your computer and will


update itself automatically

You can scan different parts of your computer:


Whole Computer
A particular file / folder (individual files)
One hard disk / cd / pendrive etc
Updating an Anti-Virus Software
Do we need to update an AV Software? Why?

New viruses are created everyday


The Anti Virus Software should be updated to make
sure your computer is safe against new viruses
An Anti Virus Software which is not updated will not
protect your computer
Make sure you update your Anti Virus Software
frequently!
