THE SUBJECT OF ARTS


SUBJECT OF ART – any person, object, scene or event described or represented in a work of art
REPRESENTATIONAL OR OBJECTIVE ARTS – arts that HAVE SUBJECT
o Examples: painting, sculpture, graphic arts, literature, and theater arts
NON-REPRESENTATIONAL OR NON-OBJECTIVE ARTS
o Arts that DON’T HAVE SUBJECT;
o Examples: music, architecture, and many functional arts
 PROGRAM MUSIC – have subject, imitate natural sounds, set a mood, narrate a story
o Do not present descriptions, stories, or references to identifiable objects or symbols
o Convey message non-objectively through elements of design (line & color)
 Bright colors – happy mood
 Dark colors – somber mood
 Light & Delicate colors -
