Manufacturing aril stem components for sale, and carrying them for rental are capitalintensive ‘enterprises. Changing standards increase risks for obsolescence of plant and inventory. Nonuniform markt ‘parceptions of what constitutes minimum acceptable properties alevate these isks. Manufacturers, contractors -and rental companies can serve the operator community better if they can avoid uncertainty about, and wnrea- sonable variety in the properties of the products thay must make and hold. On the otter side of the equation, : ‘operators, who mast often use these products on a rental basis, and who rarely have major investment in plant| 2nd inventory for cling tubular production, face significant econornic risk i the event of dil stem failure. In :enting dling components. operators need fexibilty and good product propantos to safely handlo a wide variety of downhole conditions and loads. ‘The American Petroleum Institute (API) has for decades been covering drill stem manufacture with Specifications 5D and 7. These specifications have been revised and replaced by Specifications SDP, 7-1 and 7-2 and they , have also been adopted into the [SO framework. However, « number of operators, operator groups and manu- facturers have published private manufacturing standards over the past decade or so. AP! specifications have served and continue fo serve the industry weil, yet the operators who publish proprietary standards must view the API specifications as lacking in some respects, olso thoy would net have gone to the trouble and expense of publishing private standards. As the DS-1 sponsor group examined these points, it became apparent that the ‘gaps fe itwo areas: Breadth of oovorage and proporties required for critcal-service applications. ‘The primary challenge faved by the DS-1 technical committes was fst, to mest the operators" legitimate needs ‘or coverage, flexibilty and improved properties for critical service. Yet this had to bs balanced against the le- gitimate needs of manufacturers and owners for market eimplicty and reduced plamt and inventery burders arid fisks. Tha committee also wanted to fill he technical gaps while continuing the long and satisfactory history of the AP! standards. This document represents the DS-1 sponsor group's answer fo the challange for creating @ ‘simple, balanced and easy-to-use manufacturing standard for driling tubular products, Rm aA ot, History: The 0S-1*Standard was jointly sponsored by members of the Drilling Engineers Association (EA) nd other parties as DEA Project 74. The first edition was published in December 1992, the secand edition was published in April 1998, and the third edition was published in 2004, Each publication has expanded tha scope, with three volumes for Third Edition and four volumes for Fourth Edition, Recently. a fifth volume related toinspaction of fixed cutter bits “Standard DS-1 SITS" was published. Bureau Veritas and T H Hill: in March 2012, Bureau Veritas acquired TH Hill Associates, Inc. With the acquisition. the process of Integrating T H Hil service lings and Standard DS-1 development work with Bureau Veritas’s service portfolio was initiated. On September 1, 2016 the intagration process was advanced by merg- ing T H Hill Associates with Bureau Veritas's North ‘America operating company; Bureau Veritas North America, Inc. This step has enabled expansion of the global footprint of Standard DS-1. ithas also provided ‘200833 10 an extensive network of engineering sup- Port which helped to accelerate the techtical content development efforts. The 2078 printing of this volume reprasents the culmination of one of the key iteins of this integration. ‘Sponsorship: Sponsorship of DS-1 is open to any ‘organization having an intarest in the manufacture. \dasign, operation, inspection and failure prevention of drill stems or drill stam components. Order Form / lequest for Quotation Template cene nnn Chapter 1 Introduction 1 Objectives: This pacification outlines manutac- turing and material requirements for commanly used tubular drill stam elements. The primary objective of this specification is to supplement API Specifications SDP, 7-1 and 7-2 in two important ways: 4.4.4 Coverage: Coverage is extended to same common items not presently covered by API specification. This enables manufacturers and users to standardize on an industry-wide set of attributes for these products. 1.1.2 Tighter specification: A “Critical Level” manufacturing specification is provided. It is designed to consolidate the many single-company supplemental specifications that are now in the market into a single one. "Critical Level" attributes allow & purehaser to chose products made to atighter specification when the need exists. By extending coverage and consolidating private specifications into a single industy-wide standard, the DS-1" technical committee aims frstto establish standards where nona existed, and second ta fill market neods for tighter specifications where these needs occur. At the same time, by reducing the variety of components that manufacturers are expected to build, and that drilling contractors and rental companies are expected to hold, itishoped that markot vaneactione may be made cimplar, and plant, equipment and inventory burdens will be lightened. 1.2 Seope: This specification only applies to newly manufactured equipment 1.5 Intent: This specifications intended to supplement, Notrepiace, existing AP! and ISO documents that govern the manufacture of new drill stem tubular equipment. 1.4 Levels: This specification divides all components into two levels of manufacture: Standard and Critical 441 DS-1® Standard Level: The D5-1 technical commitiee desired that API Specifioations SDP, 7-1 afd 7-2 and their ISO equivalents continue to be the fundamental specifications governing manufacture ‘of dil stem components for low- thraugh moderate- risk driling conditions. Therefore, the requirements of API Specifications SDP, 7-1 and 7-2 are adopted inall respects as OS-1 Standard Level, Except as ‘agreed separately by purchaser and manufacturer, no additional requirements are placed on any ‘Standard Level component listed herein, compared to the same component listed in API Specification 1° Fourth Editon, Volume f, Driling Tubular Product Specification —_ SDP. 7-1 and 7-2. Necessary exceptions accur for ‘Standard Level components, such as thick-walled «dill pipe, that are not covered in AP! specifications. and removal of the Qualifiad Test Coupon (QTC) ‘option for mechanical testing. which has proven unreliable. If a conflict should arise between DS-1 ‘Standard Level and API Specifications SDP, 7-1 and 7-2, the requirements of the latter shall apply except ‘that the QTC option as noted above is nat allowed 1.4.2 DS+1" Critical Lovel: Roquirements for DS-1 Criteal Level ate intended for those applications in which purchaser requires more stringent controls ‘on properties or dimonsions than is offered under present API Spacificalions SDP, 7-1 and 7-2 (or DS-1 Standard Level). The attributes adopted by the technical contrite for Critical Level are designed 10 consolidate, undar a single cover, many of the Dprivate specifications published in recent years. In this way, the technical committee hopes to simplify markets forall stem components. Those operators, manufacturers and owners who wish to limit their ‘offorts to only traditional API spectfication products may do 86 with a single easity-undersiood standard, and still cover components that are not presently addraseed by API Any component manufactured to DS-1 Critical Level will also meet al requirements for DS-1 Standard Level. Therefore, operators who need more stringent property specifications, and manufacturers and owners who wish to provide Products to beth Standard and Critical Level specifications, can do so by using the Critical Level specication. ‘This will eliminate having to deel with the mutttude of private standards now in use. 1.5 Coverage: Components covered by this standard are shown in Table 1.1 Also shown for com- parison are these components covered by applicable ‘API manufacturing specifications, and the relative relationships between the documents, 4.6 Definitions: The following detintions apply to dri pipe manufactured under this standard 4.8.1 Normal weight drill pipe (NWDP): Drill pipe in size and wall thickness ranges and upset styles shown in Tables 4.1 through 4.1.24@8RE8. Normat ‘weight drill pipe makes up the largest porticn af tha length of most drill strings today. 2 Heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP): Drill pipe the size and wall thickness ranges shown in Table 414 Heavy weight dil pipe is traditionally used in bottomhole assemblies to supply bit weight and for transition pipe between sting sections. This standard recognizes two types of HWDP, as follows: a Common HWDP: This type has tube minimum yield sirength of $5,000 psi, and employs tool Joints that are machined separately and welded onto the HWDP ube. Thelarge majority of HWDP inuse today falls into this estegory. b. High strength HWDP: A small portion of heavy weight aril pipe manufactured today is made with high strength tubes, typically of 90,000 Psi or greater minimum yield strength. Same Manufacturing processes employ tool joints that ‘re machined separately then woldad tthe tuba. Another manufacturing process forms the finished fproductby machining a single piace of metal. The latter is called intagral joint HWOP to separate it from the varieties with welded toal joints 1.8.8 Thiek-walled dill pipe (TWDP): Drill pipe in the size and wall thickness ranges shown in Table 4.51@2TEB. For a given outside diameter, the wall thickness of thick-walled dril pipe wil fall batween Normal weight and heavy weight dill pipe. Use of this pine, most notably for heavy duty landing strings, has grav in recent yoars. 1.7 Using this Standard: Easo of use was one pri- ‘mary goal in organizing this document. Readars will ‘ote that much data is given in table form. This és to facilitate locating noaded information andto make direct comparisons between Standard and Gritical Levels easier. Color codes are also used. 1.71 Component color codes: All companents ae arranged inte one of four groups, indicated by the background calarin table headings and margins. a Normal waight and thick-walled drill pipe: Rlequirements for these components are listed Under or beside @ purple background.
