saggests that about the time of tlie Samiau revolt there was a
general retnm to the earlier ("Xjydian'') monetary standard (which
had been superseded by the Attic), while the Samian type of the
lion's scalp became prevalent. This, so far as relates to the type,
may be true of a part of Lycia ; bat there are coins of Attic type
(head of Athena), and of the low standard which Six calls Attic,
which cannot be earlier than 440 b.c. (e.g. nos. 106, ill, PI. vi. 7, 12).

in the great revolt of the Satraps which came to an end in B.a 862.
liycia then fell under the power of Maussulliis, and remaiiiud under
Caria until the middle of the century. It was perhaps at the begin-
ning of or daring the Carian rulet that the Lycian Milyas was
united to Lycia proper. After a short return to Persian domination,
the combined districts were acquired by Alexander the Great without
much difficulty. Lycia lost the right of coinage,

are monetary districts, and not cities, is made clear below (see auder
GragiiB and ManqTteB). The ooma therefore, as Six has ahown,^ are
not alliance coins, hut the KP or MA simply occnpies the sane place
as the AY on other coins. To this view it is objected by Treuberf
that coins exist with the initials of Myra and Aperlae in combination
with Gragns, indicating an alliance with Cragns on the one hand and
Myra and Aperlae on the other. The latter of these coins is said
tates against Six's view. But it is quite possible that this is a real

the cities of Balbnrai Babon^ and Oenoanda in the Gibyratis (see

which seem to have belonged to the leagae at one time or another :
