    Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States and served from 1849 to 1850 as a member of the Whig Party. As president, Taylor took a strong stance on the Texas-New Mexico border dispute and slavery in the western territories. He proposed allowing residents in the Mexican Cession territories to decide the slavery issue through new state constitutions. However, Taylor died of illness after only 16 months in office, so his proposals were never fully implemented.
