MTM: 203 Riemannian Manifolds
ASSIGNMENT
(1). Let f : R2 → R3 be defined by
2a2 u 2a2 v u2 + v 2 − a2
f (u, v) = ( , , a )
a2 + u2 + v 2 a2 + u2 + v 2 a2 + u2 + v 2
and let ḡ be the Euclidean metric tensor on R3 . Then obtain the pull back metric g = f ∗ ḡ
on R2 .

(2). Show that the upper sheet of hyperboloid (Hn (a), gH ) and the Poincare ball (Bn (a), gB )
are isometric.

(3). Obtain the Christoffel symbols for pseudo Riemannian metric given by
2 2
ds2 = −dt2 + (et ) (dx2 + dy 2 + dz 2 ) + (et ) dψ 2 .

(4). Prove that the followings are equivalent:

(a). ∇ is compatible with g.
(b). If V, W are vector fields along any curve γ, then
d
< V, W >=< V, W >0 =< Dt V, W > + < V, Dt W > .
dt
(c). If V, W ∈ χ(M ) are parallel, then < V, W > is constant.

(5). If an n dimensional (n > 3) Einstein manifold is conformally flat then show that
r
R(X, Y )Z = {g(Y, Z)X − g(X, Z)Y }.
n(n − 1)

(6). On the (U 2 , g), let p = (1, 0), Vp = (0, 1) ∈ Tp U 2 . Obtain the parallel transport of Vp
along the curve α : [0, 1] → U 2 given by α(t) = (t, t + 1).

(7). Let γ : I → M be a geodesic in a Riemannian manifold (M, g) and let α : I × (−, ) →

M be a smooth map satisfying α(t, 0) = γ(t) for all t ∈ I. Let V be the vector field along
the geodesic γ defined by V (t) = ∂α(t,u)
∂u
at u = 0. Suppose that, for each u ∈ (−, ), the
curve t 7→ α(t, u) is a geodesic in M . Then prove that the vector field V satisfies the Jacobi
equation.
