This document discusses social anxiety disorder (SAD) and suicide. It notes that SAD was previously grouped with phobias and is still sometimes called social phobia. People with SAD are less likely to marry and have a reduced quality of life. Most cases of SAD go untreated due to a lack of awareness. The document also discusses the increasing rates of suicide during the current world situation and notes that suicide prevention has a low priority in many countries. The purpose is to provide information about anxiety, its signs and symptoms, and how to cope, as well as to enhance knowledge about the causes of suicide and signs of someone at risk.

*Anxiety of going outside the house and socializing other
people within the community. - Earlier, the DSM-I and -II (APA 1952, 1968) grouped it with all other phobias, and to this day psychologists still refer to SAD as social phobia (SP; Furmark 2002; Hudson and Rapee 2000). People with SAD are also less likely to marry than those who do not have this disorder. Overall, there is a reduction in quality of life, an increase in alcohol and drug misuse and a risk of suicide (Baldwin and Buis 2004). Unfortunately, most cases go untreated given there is a relative lack of awareness of the symptoms by the general population (Furmark 2002; Schneier 2006). Another, is to promote empowerment within ourselves.
*The increase number of suicide due to the current
situation of the world. - Suicide prevention is given a low priority in many Western Pacific countries due to competing health problems, stigma and poor understanding of its incidence and etiology. Little is known about the epidemiology of suicide and suicidal behaviour in the Philippines.
