As Found Desorption 183.1 mg/g 0.4 mg/g

*Estimated expanded uncertainty U with a coverage factor of k=2, corresponding to a level of confidence of approx. 95 %, as defined in the
Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement [2].

Certified value

The certified value has been established using a Thermogravimetric–Differential Scanning

Calorimetry System. The certified value is the mean value of n measurements.

The certified value corresponds to the cSmartCal values determined with Mettler-Toledo
Halogen Moisture Analyzers listed in the table below.

Test temperature [°C] cSmartCal moisture analyzer target

values [%MC]
70 3.8 ± 0.1
100 5.8 ± 0.1
130 8.1 ± 0.1
160 10.8 ± 0.1

Method parameters of the Mettler-Toledo Halogen Moisture Analyzer

Drying Program: Standard

Switch-off criterion: Timed, 10 min
Ambient conditions: 20 °C; 50% relative humidity

The certification measurements of the desorption are performed by BAM Federal Institute for
Materials Research and Testing using a Thermogravimetric – Differential Scanning
Calorimetry System.

The target value of the desorption using a Thermogravimetric – Differential Scanning

Calorimetry System and the corresponding cSmartCal values determined with Mettler-Toledo
Halogen Moisture Analyzers are provided by Mettler-Toledo.
Method

The test procedure is based on DIN 51006 Thermal analysis (TA) Thermogravimetry (TG)
principles with regard to the specific requirements for the characterization of the moisture
content of the Zeolite 3A.

The production lot is tested by measuring the desorption characteristics of representative

samples.

The common test procedure for Thermogravimetric Analysis (TG) is followed using a nitrogen
purging method (99.8% N2). The TG analysis is conducted by applying a defined heating rate
of 10 K/min up to 550 °C and a subsequent dwell time of 3 hours. The standard procedure
includes a repeat determination.
The result of the test is expressed as the relative weight loss of the sample based on its
initial weight.

Uncertainty Evaluation

Uncertainty is calculated according to GUM JGCM 100:2008 chapter 4.2 “Type A” evaluation of
standard uncertainty [2]. The estimate of the expected value of a quantity q that varies
randomly, and for which n independent observations qk have been obtained under the same
conditions of measurement. The arithmetic mean or average 𝑞̅ of n = 5 observations

𝑛
1
𝑞̅̅ = ∑ 𝑞̅𝑘
𝑛
𝑘=1

is the best available estimate or expected value.

The experimental variance of the observations, which estimates the variance σ2 of the
probability distribution of q, is given by

𝑛
1 2
𝑠 2 (𝑞̅𝑘 ) = ∑(𝑞̅𝑗 − 𝑞̅̅)
𝑛−1
𝑗=1

This estimate of variance and its positive square root s(qk), termed the experimental
standard deviation, characterize the variability of the observed values qk , or more specifically,
their dispersion about their mean q. It is used as the measure of the uncertainty of 𝑞̅.

𝑢 = 𝑠(𝑞̅̅)
Traceability Statement

The Thermogravimetry – Differential Scanning Calorimetry System is calibrated with a

certified weight for traceability to the SI unit kilogram.
The temperature is calibrated by using the defined melting point of a gold-pearl which is
measured in the Thermogravimetry – Differential Scanning Calorimetry System. The
characteristic melting temperature must fit to the exothermic peak of the melting point of
the gold.

Homogeneity

The homogeneity is assured by applying an appropriate production process. A series of

samples is taken to verify the compliance with the production tolerances. The production
process is permanently controlled by a process capability analysis that requires a Cpk index of
1.33 or higher.

Relation to moisture analyzer values

Variations of desorption properties may occur between different raw material lots, which is
expressed by varying TG values. These lot-to-lot variations are quantified by comparative
measurements with TG and Halogen Moisture Analyzers referring to the reference raw
material lot. The target TG value for the desorption characteristics of a new raw material lot
is adjusted to ensure constant cSmartCal moisture analyzer target values, independent of
raw material properties.
