The use of traps or other devices with operating mechanisms should be avoided 5.4.1.6 Design Details ‘There are many design details and features that merit particular emphasis with respect to relieving systems ‘The following points are not to be taken as definitive or restrictive. 1. Normally, the laterals from individual relieving de- vices should enter a header from above. This tends to keep any liquids that may flow or develop in the header ‘out of the laterals to each vaive. “3 2. Laterals leading from individual valves located at an elevation above the header should drain to the header. Locating a safety valve below the header elevation in closed systems should be avoided wherever possible Laterals from individual valves that must be located below the header should be arranged to rise contin- uuously (0 the top of the header entry point. However, means should be provided to prevent liquid accumu Jation on the discharge side of these valves. 3. A slope of Yi inch in 10 feet (21 millimeters in 10 meters) is suggested for all laterals and headers, taking into account piping deflections between supports 4, Where individual valves are’ vented 10 the atmo- sphere, an adequate drain hole [a nominal pipe size of % inch (NPS ¥2) is usually considered suitable] should be provided at the low point to ensure that no liquid collects downstream of the valve. The vapor flow that occurs through this hole during venting is not generally considered significant, but each case should be checked to see if the drain connection should be piped to a safe location. Vapors escaping from the drain hole must not be allowed to impinge against the vessel shell, since accidental ignition of such vent streams can setiously weaken the shell. 5. The use of angle entry—an entry at 45 degrees (0.79 radian) or even 30 degrees (0.52 radian) to the header axisfor laterals is much more common in relieving systems than in most process piping systems. The two main reasons for this approach are lower pressure drop (including velocity head losses) and reduced reaction forces. Since laterals in relieving sysiems can often be sized at velocities approaching sonic, pressure losses or recoveries caused by velocity change can become a sig- nificant factor in system analysis. These high velocities coupled with the significant vapor densities can produce large reaction forces. 6. Sectionalizing of the header system by valving for maintenance or safety should be considered. Such valves should be provided with locking or sealing de- vices. Where valving cannot be justified, the pro DE PREZULINE SYSTEMS NG ans DEPRESSUANG SYSTEMS 5 for blinding should be studied. In locating sectionalizing valves or blinds, extreme caution must be exercised in their use to ensure that equipment which is operating is not isolated from its relieving system. Valves in’ the header system, if used, should be mounted so that they cannot fail in the closed position (for example, a gate falling into its closed position), + 5 2. DRUMS AND SEALS. $4.21 Sizing a Knockout Drum Sizing a knockout drum is generally a trial-and-error process. First, the drum size required for liquid en- trainment separation is determined. Liquid particles will separate when the residence time of the vapor oF {gas s equal 10 or greater than the time required to travel the available vertical height at the dropout velocity of the liquid particles and the vertical gas velocity is suf- ficiently low to permit the liquid droplet to fall. This vertical height is usually taken as the distance from the liquid surface. The vertical velocity of the vapor and gas ‘must be low enough to prevent large slugs of liquid from entering the flare. Since the flare ean handle small-sized liquid droplets, the allowable vertical velocity in the drum may be based on that necessary to separate drop- lets fiom 300 t0 600 micrometersin diameter. The drop- Out velocity [8] of a particle in a stream is calculated as 4 © Where: ug= dropout velocity, in feet per second (meters per second) acceleration due to gravity, at 32 feet per second per second (9.8 meters per second per second). Particle diameter, in feet (meters). P= density of the liquid at operating conditions, in Pounds per cubic foot (kilograms per cubic meter) v= density of the vapor at operating conditions, in pounds per cubic foot (kilograms per cubic meter), (C= drag coefficient (see Figure 9). 8 This basic equation is widely accepted for all forms of entrainment separation The second step in sizing a knockout drum is to con- sider the effect any liquid contained in the drum may have on reducing the volume available for vapor/tiquid disengagement. This liquid may result from (1) conden- sate that separates during a vapor release or (2) liquid streams that accompany a vapor release. It is suggested that the volume occupied by the liquid be based on a selease lasting 20-30 minutes. Any accumulation of lige Guoe ron Pressune-Retievis ax0 OcPRESSURNG SYSTEMS 5a pounds per hour (21.3 kilograms per second) of vapor. In addition, 500 gallons (1.89 cubic meters) of storage for miscellancous drainings from the units is desired. ‘The schematic in Figure 10 applies. The droplet size selected as allowable is 300 micrometers (0.000984 foot) in diameter. The vapor rate is determined as follows: Vapor rate 169,000 pounds per hour (G00 seconds per hour) (0.18 pounds per eubie Foot) = 261 actual cubic feet per second In metric units, this translates to: 21.3 kilograms per second 29 kilograms per cubic meter .34 cubic meters per second Vapor rate = ‘The drag coefficient, C, is determined from Figure 9 as follows: 0.95 x 10" 0.18) (0.000984)?
