Voltaic Cell

What is a voltaic cell?

 An electrochemical cell that can be created by placing metallic
electrode into an electrolyte where a chemical reaction either uses
or generates an electric current is called a voltaic cell.

HOW IT WORKS ?
 Magnesium is used as the cathode and Graphite as the anode
 The graphite anode attracts the Na+ and H+ ions while the
magnesium cathode attracts the OH- and Cl- ions found in
seawater
 At the cathode only the H+ ion is discharged to give hydrogen gas
 At the anode only the Cl- ion is discharged
 A flow of electron producing an electric current is formed

Equations
 At cathode
2H+(aq) + 2e- H2(g)
 At anode
2Cl-(aq) – 2e-Cl2(g)

What is osiris??
Osiris carries our vision towards an innovative way to engineer a ship
devoid of products that are detrimental to the marine ecosystem. It is
designed to replace non-renewable sources of energy which
considerably contribute to the degradation of marine wildlife.
Osiris represents a goal which each and every engineer should dare to
achieve in a post-modern world where mass consumption continues to
escalate.

OSIRIS, ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ?

This project suggests an eco-friendly alternative to

prevent pollution in our oceans.

Facts about sea water

Why is protecting the ocean crucial?
 The ocean is the largest ecosystem on Earth.
It can be referred to as the planet’s life support system.Oceans
generate half of the oxygen we breathe, and they contain more than
97% of the world’s water. We should yearn for unpolluted
seawater, for the sake of all earthlings; for the children of
tomorrow.

 Oceans provide at least a sixth of the animal protein people eat.

The fishing industry is important in the job market, for fishermen
for example, and on the whole, for a country’s economy, fish
becomes a healthier option in a world where awareness is
constantly being raised on health concerns.
Using sea water as energy to fuel a ship would significantly reduce
the death of fish and fish eggs wiped out by oil spills. The latter
can also cause toxicity in fish, which could be detrimental to both
marine life and sea birds, and to human beings, if not analysed
before consumption. Implementing the seawater concept would
contribute to sustainability, an aim for Mauritius and most
countries all around the world.

 Seas contribute largely to the Mauritius Tourism Sector, the

third pillar of our economy.
Without clean oceans, the slogan ‘Sun, Sand and Sea’ would be
incomplete. Protecting our seas is pivotal, as not only are they part
of our identity as Mauritians but are also a source of leisure. Both
for tourists and fellow Mauritians, our beautiful seas are
entertained by water sports such as swimming, kayaking,
windsurfing, scuba diving, among many others.
