Now let us see column placements in various
apartment blocks – apartments over stilts.

The key here is to adjust the column positions to

suit parking at stilt level too.

Sometimes it is not possible – so some columns

have to be eliminated at stilt level and floating
columns provided above for the apartments.
When this happens, the columns below will be
bigger.

Positioning / Locating columns in apartments

teaches column placements as an intense exercise

If you had a semi circular structure or as an
arc, it need not necessarily have columns
placed radially. You could have a rectilinear or
some other grid too. Again, architecturally, if
you wished to have radial like grid, it is not
necessary that it must be geometrically radial,
i.e. producing the centre line to meet at the
centre of arc.

Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
Radial lines are shown since the peripheral columns are
placed radially (perpendicular to the arc for aesthetics)

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
Notice the centre of arc. Beams do not meet at the center by
producing them beyond the wall. They need not be. This is
aesthetically more pleasing. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.
ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
Beams need not necessarily rest on
columns but could rest on beams too.
Sometimes, depending on the loading and
depending on the soil’s load bearing
capacity, it might become more
economical to have wider placing of
columns but have intermediate roof
beams other than the ones connecting
columns, to reduce the span of the RC
slab.

If you had a large odd shaped hall,
grid beams could have irregular
interesting grid too.

Now let me talk about widely spaced
columns where the beams have longer
spans. As I already told you last time,
these might not be expensive. And when
the building has a good set back from the
boundaries where they abut roads, every
thing is fine.

Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
But when these buildings are very close to
the road or roads in case of road more
than one side of the boundary, these
buildings would start slightly vibrating
when, say, a lorry passes with a fairly
good speed. You could feel the vibration
inside the building on the floor. These
vibrations would cause fatigue to the
columns and might lead to shorter
longevity of the structure.
Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.
ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
So when the buildings are very close to
the road or even smack on the boundary
like what you see in Madurai city, some
special care has to be taken to ensure that
fatigue does not cause a strain on the
structure. The columns and beams would
have to be larger in these cases. But this
does not prevent vibration being felt on
the insides of the floors but the structure
would be safe and longevity would not be
shortened. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.

Floating columns – let us see today in
a different perspective than what we saw
last.

If there is a large podium floor with

larger spacing of columns and with a
tower on top of it with a much lesser foot
print, then floating columns have to be
provided

CANTILEVERS

Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
Simplest way to explain a
cantilever: Place a wooden / plastic
student scale on a table & project
out to more than half outside the
table and place a weight over the
rear part resting on the table. The
counter weight makes the
cantilever stable.

Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.

ARCHITECT & INTERIOR ARCHITECT, MADURAI.
It is the counter weight which
plays the major role in a stable
cantilever.

This can be achieved in many

ways.

This is a structure with angular fins on the West side, and these fins
are 4 inches thick x 3-1/2 feet long and these act as structural fins
eliminating columns.

Please notice the gap between horizontal sunshade and also the holes
in vertical fins. These create free flow of air within the fin structure
thus eliminating heat traps forming within the rectangular recessses
of the fins. Presentation by P.R.S. Sivakumar, B.ARCH., F.I.I.A., F.I.V.
