When I finished high school I didn’t know what major to choose in

University. One Sunday, I found an advertising from the Engineering Faculty of

the UNA in the newspaper mentioning that the admission courses were open. I
signed up the next day. I was admitted to the Faculty and I signed up to
Electronic Engineering, but taking programming classes I realized that it wasn’t
what I wanted. There are advantages of taking one year of college classes before
selecting a major. One year of classes gives people more knowledge about many
areas of study, they can find attractive a new area that they didn’t know before,
and it helps them to take a responsible choice.

Learning about many areas gives people more confident and helps them to
discard subjects that they don’t like; it is a very important first filter. For
example: You like science in general and you realize that you don’t enjoy
chemistry and biology classes, so you can cross out medicine and biology from
your list. The only disadvantage of this is that if everything you learn is
interesting to you and you don’t know how to discard some subjects.

Maybe there are other cases where people know more or less what subjects
they like but they don’t know exactly what to major in. Another example of this
can be that you like math, and engineering, and you realize in the first year of
study that you enjoy astronomy classes. In that moment you can find a
professional future in this area that you didn’t know you like it before. The only
thing you have to be careful is whether you really like the area or it is
momentary.

The main advantage of taking one year of college classes before selecting
a major is that this gives you solid tools to choose what you really want. Ones
you decide what career to follow you can say properly why you chose it. For
instance, you pick Electrical Engineering because you like Maths, Physics, and
you like understanding how electrical currents works. You have a real reason
why you chose this major.

Taking one year of courses has more advantages than disadvantages. It

gives students many subject to learn before making a decision; it can help to find
attractive a subject that they didn’t like before, and almost helps them to take a
responsible choice. This year of studying helps people in a stage in their life
where they have to make very important decisions without a lot of experience.
