Based from my observations, President Barack Obama started his
speech with all the things that he is planning to do and trying to involve his
audience, or his citizens rather, to take part and cooperate for this objectives
to be done. Thus, part of it begins with his self and he also involve others.
Moreover, he also continued sharing his experiences like meeting
Laura, a young mother and also how his mother fought for her insurance
coverage, and these stories were a great example for his audience to relate
on what he’s talking about. In this part, he is making both a content and
relational dimension. The complicated part in his speech maybe is the way
people will agree or disagree in his plan. Because before then, he was
proposing a one trillion dollar for his reform ideas, and it’s quite a lot. But his
speech help him to convince the people. He just keeps on informing the
people the stories of different people who suffered because of weak health
care system, and the things that may happen if his proposal would be
approved.
Also, this speech cannot be reversed anymore. He is the president. He
is proposing a plan. What he said in front of many professionals cannot be
changed anymore unless there are some misunderstanding that needs
explanations. It cannot be repeated either, because it may seem different the
second way around. It is a one-time experience that is why he has put every
words he needed for the audience. But not too much words, because quantity
does not increase communication quality.
He then closed with a rhetorical flourish -- "That is the health care
system we can build. That is the future within our reach" -- and left to
generous applause. I must say that President Obama's speech to the
American Medical Association Monday was a very comprehensive statement
about reform and given the setting, some might say it was also one of his
most courageous statements.

1. In the beginning of the chapter, six advantages to studying communication are
discussed. Explain how these benefits apply to you in your chosen area of
study.

Having good communication skills means relaying your message to

others in the clearest, most concise form possible. In order to be a successful
accountant, there are a ton of hard and soft skills one must have and one of
these is communication. But how does these six advantages to studying
communication benefits and prepares an accountancy student into becoming
a proficient accounting communicator?

The first and second advantages of studying communication

compliments each other. The first advantage is that it can improve the way
you see yourself. Being a fluent English speaker nowadays boost someone’s
confident as he/she is able to communicate to everyone even to other races.
But knowing the English language alone does not guarantee you being a
good communicator. One must also know the right behaviour before speaking
to someone especially if you are an accountant talking to a client. Thus, in
communication, one must need to embrace a personality wherein he/she and
the listener is comfortable. Through these, you can be more proud and
confident with yourself, and eventually your client will understand what you
are offering. And so it will also take part on the second advantage, on how it
can also improve the ways others see you. Knowing yourself and improving it
first is the only way you can improve how others will see or appreciate you the
way you want them. So be mindful of yourself, because it is where the
communication starts.

The third advantage is the result of the first and second advantage as it
can increase what you know about human relationships. A lack of
communication can lead to frustrated or even lost clientele. It is not just about
the words that you use, but it also includes humor, stress management, active
listening and more that will build trust between you and your client. Thus, it
really is an advantage for a student to study communication as early as
possible because being a student who engages into different organizations is
the perfect moment into knowing other people. Eventually, the more you talk
to other people, the more you will know about human relationships and more
personality you can bring in your workplace in the future.

The fourth advantage is that it can teach you important life skills. Being
an accountant in the future requires you a lot of preparation. May it be
analysing situations, solving problems and communicating with clients. But,
studying communication can give you a glimpse of these situations and you
can actually think of it as a training ground in preparation of your chosen
career, moreover, anyone’s career. Eventually, it will also lead you to the fifth
advantage which is exercising your right of freedom of speech. Applying the
important life skills communication has taught you, you will then be able to
indulge yourself to your right of freedom of speech. Because being an
accountant is not just about talking to clients, and making financial statements
and advices. An accountant also have the knowledge of knowing if there is
something wrong with the government by just looking into their budget plans
and distributions.

The sixth advantage is very much obvious and well understood.

Communication can help you succeed professionally. You can’t even pass
your subject without communicating. Communication is a vital part of living.
Why do you think all successful professionals are invited to talk in front of the
public? Because they are good speakers and that is how they become
successful. That’s how communication works. When you put personality to
your words, you do not just succeed, you even inspires other people, and that
what makes you a successful professional.

Lastly, studying communication helps you navigate an increasingly

diverse world. Studying English is very beneficial as it is the universal
language. It is even the business language. It helps you being an accountant
because you will also able to talk to foreign clients. In this world of diversity,
communicating their language is the only way to understand and to be
understood by people, and that is how you can build their trust.

All the seven studying communication advantages combined clearly

says one thing – communication matters. It matters to you being a student for
now, and more when you are already a professional. It matters to your clients,
may it be local or international. It matters to you being a speaker who want to
change the world, and it matters to your listeners who want to be inspired.

2. Think of your own computer use. How do you use computer-mediated

communication (CMC) in your daily life (that is for school, personal use, or
work?)? Do you use one kind of CMC more than the other?

As a student, I always use computer-mediated communication

specifically the applications like Messenger, Google Meet, Google Mail, and
Zoom. These applications allow us students to communicate to our teachers

and vice versa through sending text messages, images and documents. It
also allow us to call each other through voice and video calls. Most especially
in this kind of situation wherein the pandemic is still happening, this kind of
communication is the only option of our teachers in order to distribute the
lessons to us students.
As for my personal use, social media like Messenger, Facebook,
Instagram and Twitter are also a great way to communicate with my families
and friends. This medias allow us to send messages may it be word or voice,
call each other through voice or video calls and post some status updates that
will start a conversation.
Of all the applications stated above, I must say that Messenger is the
most used one more than the other applications. It is because it can be used
in formal and informal conversations or calls. This platform can be used by
teachers to talk to their students, and also this can be used by a person to talk
to his/her friends informally.
Our country, the world rather, is facing a pandemic and the only way to
communicate to each other in a safer way is through computer-media
communication (CMC). This platform has been very useful in spreading
information and awareness but also we must be vigilant and responsible on
sharing news and information. All of these are made for us to use it properly in
order to inform, protect, raise awareness and save lives.
