CONFERENCE ABOUT INTRODUCTION OF

AYURVEDA

Meaning of the word Ayurveda

Ayur : Life
Veda : Science, knowledge
Together :The living science or knowlegde about the way of
living .

The knowledge of Ayurveda comes from Adharvana (in

Tamil) or Atharva Veda (the last of the 4 Veda : Rig Veda,
Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda .
The knowledge  we have today is found from: Charaka
Samhita and Sushruta Samhita.

The Yoga comes from the Rig Veda (the first veda)
This is one of the oldest Holistic (the entire body) healing
system. It was developed aproximately 6000 years before in
India.
It is based on the belief that the health and the wellness
depend on a delicate balance between body, mind and spirit.

The principle of Ayurveda :

This is the way of life without disease and physical problems.
Preventing the disease and improve the immunity on the
human body.

Ayurveda doesn’t treat directly the disease. The entire

Ayurveda system stimulates the body cells, supplies the
fresh blood and oxygens the individual cells to the entire
body to improve the immune system, and so the body cells
will heal the disease naturally.

So that the treatments will work very slowly and there is no

side effects. As well, during the intaking ayurvedic treatment
and medicine, you have to believe and put a positive
intention. If not it will not works better.
The Ayurvedic way treats the disease from the root level.
That means the disease will not come back again because
the body cells will have the knowledge to treat the disease.
The body cells memorise like vaccination principle.

Ayurveda follows the AHIMSA, the « NON VIOLENCE ».

It means, it promotes, it recomands Vegetarian Diet because
we get the toxines from the food.
For example : only the human will get all the disease.
Animals and birds will not have that much disease as a
human. Because the animals and birds will not eat different
kind of food compare to the human. So Ayurveda recomands
to have a better vegetarian diet to keep away from the
disease .
The ayurveda recomands herbal, yoga, pranayama, physical
exercices, vegetarian diet to improve the healthy life.

Relashionship between yoga and ayurveda :

Both Ayurveda and Yoga, for the human wellbeeing, come
from the vedic knowledge. Both are considered to be as Sister
practice.
Yoga deals with harmonising the mind, body and soul.
Ayurveda takes care of the persons, and heals both mental
and physical.

Yoga is important for dissolving physical stress and calming

the mind before the meditation (state of unity, concentrate in
One) .
Ayurvedic treatments ( like Pancha Karma) rejuvenate the
body, improve the digestion and remove the stress.

The Ayurvedic text book reference is : Charaka Samhita.

It explains that when the person do the forward bendings
yoga asana, it helps to cool the body Pitta Dosha (stimulation
of organs).
The yoga asana in twisting postures help the digestion, and
control the Kapha dosha.
The backward bending asanas will heal the body to improve
the Vata dosha.

So that, we could understand what is the relationship

between Yoga and Ayurveda.

DOSHA and 5 ELEMENTS :

The five elements are Earth,Fire ,Water,Air,Sky.
In the universe all things, humans and animals are
made out of the five elements .
What ever in the ratio of the five elements in the universe the
same level is on the human body according to the ayurveda
text .

In the human body the five elements represent :

Earth : Bone ,skin,nerve,muscle, hair,

Fire : food, sleep, fear, inbreeding, sloth
Air : Running, walking, standing, sitting,
Sky: Angas, compassion, prejudice, fear, shy
Water:blood, sperm, urine, brain, colostrol

According to the ayurvedic constitutions, Prakriti ( the

natural constitution) of the body are named VATA, PITTA,
KAPHA.
VATA body type is based on EARTH and AIR elements.
Vata is responsible in the human body of: breathing,
blinking eyes, muscles and tissue movements ,and the pulse
of the heart and movement of cytoplasma.

PITTA is based on FIRE and WATER elements

Pitta dosha will help in the human body : digestion,
absorption, assimilitation, nutrition, metabolism and keep
the body temperature in a constant level.

KAPHA is based on the WATER and EARTH elements.

It maintains the glue to hold the body cells. It will help to
supply the water to all over the body parts and the system to
lubricate the joins and moisturise the skin. It maintains the
immunity. Kapha is expressed as love, calmness, quietness
and forgiveness.

We have to keep these 3 dosha in a stable condition.

If one increases the body internal organs will get unbalanced
and it will lost the original. So that, we get problems and
diseases.
For example, in the universe, when the rain, the
temperature, wind…the earth, the sky are normal, we do
have a peacfull life with the nature. If one is more than
normal (unbalanced), we will have some issues.
For example, when earth is unbalanced, earthquick will
happen. It will destroy many things. If water is unbalanced,
too much rain .. everything will be destroyed. The same with
the wind…
In the same way it will happen in the human body. If dosha
are unbalanced, there will be some problems in the human
body, so that we have to maintain the 3 dosha in a good
level.

The WATER form of temple in TIRUVANAIKAL
The AIR form of the temple is in KALAHASTHI
The FIRE form of temple is in TIRUVANNAMALAI
The SPACE form of temple is in CHIDAMBARAM

5 SENSES :
- HEARING……………..ether
- SIGHT………………….fire
- SMELL…………………earth
- TOUCH…………….....air
- TASTE…………………water

According to Ayurveda, we can treat our body through the 5

senses.
For example : sound therapy, healing sight (going outside
seeing and being with the nature), aromatherapy, taste
through the food, massage or therapeutic touch ….

For the taste sense : Ayurveda categorises food into 6

tastes :
Sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent.
Each taste has unique effect on our body physiology and
provides the flavour that makes the eating pleasure. If you
include the 6 tastes in your meal you will get the proper
nutrition and then the 6 tastes will balance the dosha.

Therapeutic touch :
This kind of treatment like acupressure, marma and
massage will remove the stress and stimulate the body cells
to improve blood circulation and the immunity.

AGNI :
Agni means HEAT or FIRE ;
According to the Ayurveda Agni is responsible for the
digestion and metabolism process in the human body. We
have to keep it in a proper balance.

The 7 Dhastu (tissus) :

According to Ayurveda in the human body, we have 7
differents kinds of tissus :
- Plasma - Rasa
- Blood – Rakta
- muscles – Mamsa
- fat – Meda
-bones – Asthi
- nerves – Majja

Differents fields of investigation of Ayurveda to keep

restoring the balance :

- Shirodhara

- Nasia
- Therapeutic massga (Abhyanga, Kalari)
- Herbal steam
- Vomiting treatment ( Vamana)
- Enima ( cleaning intestins)
…...

3 – maintain the proper time in taking food ( breakfast,
lunch, dinner)
4 – avoid taking water during the meal and talking

9- the bathing system has to be very precise to keep the
temperature in a constant level. The bathing system will have
as additional support to reduce the temperature of the body.
That means we have to take a shower lower temperature
than our body temperature. That means we have to take the
shower less than 37 Celcius temperature. Then it will helps
the body. Not more than 37. During the shower, we have to
do like a self massage to apply the soap. The proper shower
will help to nurse the body, increase the blood circulation,
stimulate the internal organs, calm the nervous system,
support to have a good sleep, to balance the 3 dosha.
