Chapter: 2.1 (Sets & Functions)

1. Define: Finite set, Infinite set, Subset, Proper subset, Universal set,
Ordered pair, Cartesian product.
2. Show that, the set of all natural numbers is an infinite set.
3. Express the following sets in tabular method:
a) A= { x : x  N , x 2  15 and x3  600 } Ans:{4,5,6,7,8}

b) B = { x  N : x 2  x  2  0} Ans: {2}
c) 𝐶 = {x ∈ N: x, is a factor of 42 and multiple of 6} Ans: {6,42}
4. P = { x : x  N and x 2  7 x  6  0}

Q ={ x : x  N and 1  x  5} and R = { 2,4,6}

a) Prove that, ( P | Q)  (Q | P)  ( P  Q) | ( P  Q)
b) Show that, P  (Q  R)  ( P  Q)  ( P  R)

5. A= {x : x  R and x2 – (a + b)x + ab = 0}, B = {2, 3} and C = {3, 5, 6}

a) Express the set A in tabular method. Ans:{a,b}
b) Show that, P(B  C) = P(B)  P(C)
c) Prove that, A  (B  C) = (A  B )  (A  C)
