RAN introduction
W-CDMA Radio Access Network (W-CDMA RAN)
The W-CDMA RAN is composed of at least one Radio Network Subsystem (RNS). An
RNS covers a certain geographical area. It is equivalent to the GSM BSS. Each RNS is
composed of one Radio Network Controller (RNC) and one or more Node Bs. RNSs are
interconnected through the Iur interface of each RNC to form a network.
Alcatel-Lucent RAN components for W-CDMA
The Alcatel-Lucent W-CDMA RAN is based on the following components:
• RNC
• Node B
• WMS for the OAM part
RNC
The Alcatel-Lucent RNC is 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) compliant. It is
based on the Multiservice Switch platform.
The main functions of the RNC are to control and manage:
• Radio Access Network (RAN)
• signaling between Core Network (CN) components and the Radio Network System
(RNS)
• Node Bs and associated radio resources
Node B
The Alcatel-Lucent Node Bs are 3GPP-compliant.
The Alcatel-Lucent Node B portfolio includes:
• conventional unitary base stations
• digital base stations
• radio base stations
• radio heads
• base station routers
The main functions of the Node B are:
• network interface management
• radio access
PRELIMINARY

• call processing
• configuration and supervision
• synchronization

WMS
The Alcatel-Lucent Wireless Management System (WMS) delivers an integrated UMTS
management platform through which all Network Elements (NE) can be monitored and
controlled.
It plays an important role in providing the foundation of a complete end-to-end
management solution for UMTS networks. The WMS manages the entire UMTS
network, which is divided into:
• the W-CDMA RAN
• the Core Network (circuit-switched and packet-switched traffics).
The Access Network OAM manages the RAN part of the network.
The main functions of Access Network OAM are the following:
• fault management
• configuration management
• performance management

LTE Radio Access Network (LTE RAN)

The LTE RAN provides the physical radio link between the User Equipment (UE) and the
Evolved Packet Core (EPC) network.
It comprises eNodeBs that supports Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO).
The eNodeB communicates with the Evolved Packet Core (EPC) using the S1 interface,
specifically with the MME (Mobility Management Entity) and S-GW (Serving Gateway).
The MME and S-GW are implemented as separate network nodes to facilitate
independent scaling of the control and user plane (CP, UP).

GSM Radio Access Network (GSM RAN)
The GSM RAN is composed of at least one Base Station Subsystem (BSS). The BSS
provides radio access for Mobile Stations (MS) to the PLMN. Each BSS is composed of
one Base Station Controller (BSC) and one or more BTSs.
The Alcatel-Lucent BSS is responsible for handling traffic and signaling between a
mobile phone and the NSS. The BSS carries out transcoding of speech channels,
allocation of radio channels to mobile phones, paging, quality management of
transmission and reception over the Air interface and many other tasks related to the radio
network.
Alcatel-Lucent RAN components for GSM
The Alcatel-Lucent GSM RAN is based on the following main components:
Base Station Controller (BSC)
Base Transceiver Station (BTS)
Transcoder (TC)
OMC-R
For more information on GSM network elements, GSM RAN functions and interfaces,
architecture, ..., see Alcatel-Lucent Base Station Subsystem - BSS - Overview,
9YZ-03803-1802-TQZZA.
BSC
The BSC provides control of the BTS and manages radio resources and radio parameters.
From a transmission point of view, the BSC also performs a concentration function if
more radio traffic channels than terrestrial channels are connected to the MSC. A single
BSC can control a large number of BTS. The exact number is a function of the BSC
equipment and the configurations used.
The BSC provides:
Resource management
Database management
Radio measurement processing
Channel management
Operations and maintenance functions within the BSS
Communication with the OMC-R
Switching between the Air Interface channels (and associated Abis channels), and the
A Interface channels.

Power system
Overview
The 9712 lightRadio OD cabinet is proposed in -48 VDC version or AC (230V AC)
version. In the AC version, the 9712 lightRadio Outdoor Cabinet requires an AC/DC
rectifier shelf.
The following power options are available in the outdoor cabinet:
• DC power
• AC input power without internal battery
• AC input power with internal battery
• AC input power with external battery (future)
The -48VDC is distributed inside the cabinet through a Power Distribution Panel (PDP).

AC power supply
The 9712 lightRadio Outdoor Cabinet can be powered with a nominal voltage of 230V
AC (50/60 Hz) under single phase (L, N, PE) or under three phases (L1, L2, L3, N, PE).
The AC power cable is specific to the lightRadio cabinet and is delivered in 16m length.
Its diameter does not exceed 20mm supporting up to 6KW. It exists in two versions:
Single phase and ground (3x6 mm²) and Three phases and ground (5x4 mm²).
In the AC version:
• The compact or small cabinet can accept a 2U rack AC/DC rectifier with an input of
230V AC. For a detailed description of the rectifier, see “Optional 19” rack mounted
rectifier” (p. 3-27)
• One or two 2U set of batteries can be installed within 19” rack - 7U height. For a
detailed description of the batteries, see “Optional 19” rack mounted battery”
(p. 3-29)

DC power supply
The 9712 lightRadio Outdoor Cabinet can be powered from external -48V DC power
supply, nominal voltage under normal operation in the range from -40,5V to -57V DC.
The input power cable is connected to a pair of the DC capacitors (75A for small cabinet
and 200A for compact cabinet). The DC power cable is delivered per 100m roll and made
on site. The recommended length is up to 10m per cabinet. It consists of 2 DC power

Cabinet grounding
Inside the 9712 lightRadio Outdoor Cabinet, all the mechanical parts conducting or
exposed to fault current are connected to the main earthing bolt (GND). A GND cable
must be provided to connect each cabinet AC or DC to a common bonding network
(CBN). GND cable is delivered in 100m roll. One roll must be used for several cabinets,
assuming that on site the ground cable is cut to the minimum necessary length between
the cabinet and ground bar/plate.

Internal DC Power Distribution in the cabinet

Each 9712 lightRadio Outdoor Cabinet has a dedicated space for mounting a DC Power
Distribution Panel (PDP). The PDP is located to the left of the main component rack
mounting and thus does not consume any of the vertical rack space.
The PDP provides the DC distribution and over-current protection. For a detailed
description of the PDP, see “Power Distribution Panel (PDP)” (p. 3-18).

Thermal management and airflow

Overview
The 9712 lightRadio OD cabinet equipment operates in a temperature-controlled
environment. The internal temperature of enclosures is regulated with a combination of
direct air cooling technology and cooling fans.
The 9712 lightRadio OD cabinet cooling system includes the following components:
• Cooling fans dedicated to each module (digital or radio)
• direct air cooling system installed on the inside door panel
Below 33°C, cooling is only provided by the equipment fans and the cabinet is working
in internal re-circulation mode. Above 33°C, the direct air cooling system switches on and
hot air is expelled to the outside air environment. For cold temperature conditions, a
heater is used and thermally activated shutters allow control of the airflow within the
cabinet.
The following figure illustrates the thermal equipment of the small cabinet.

Direct Air Cooling system
The Direct Air Cooling system is used in the 9712 lightRadio OD cabinet to maintain the
correct air environment within the cabinet.
The Direct Air Cooling system is mounted on the inside door panel of the 9712
lightRadio OD cabinet. It cools the internal air pushing fresh air from the outside of the
cabinet and expelling hot air on the rear surface to the outside.
Removable panels allow the adaptation of the airflow path to accommodate the airflow
configuration needed by the components (for example front to back versus side to side).
For cold temperature conditions, grills are thermally activated to adapt the airflow path
within the cabinet.
• To conserve energy, the grills open or close according to the internal temperature of
the cabinet.
• The panels close progressively as the temperature decreases thus causing more air to
be recirculated within the cabinet rather than being exhausted.
A LRCC (lightRadio Cabinet Controller) allows to:
• Monitor the cabinet temperature with two thermistors
• Control speed of cabinet fans based on temperature
The following figure illustrates the 9712 lightRadio OD cabinet air paths when the
internal air temperature is above 25°C.
