Signaling Specifications
Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA) is the number of calls attempted at a busy hour. Signaling
procedures required for completing a call may include call setup and release (including CS
fallback if it occurs) and the following activities during the on-hold call: handover, tracking
area update (TAU), bearer setup and release, and switching between the in-synchronization
state and the out-of-synchronization state. BHCA indicates the signaling processing
capabilities of a system.

A busy-hour call initiated on different operator networks involves different types and numbers
of signaling procedures and therefore consumes different amounts of eNodeB resources. As a
result, the BHCA capability varies depending on the call model.

The following table lists the signaling specifications of an FDD eNodeB based on the typical
board configuration and the definition of one BHCA, which is provided in Traffic Model.

NOTE

Traffic Model
On live networks, the traffic capacity of an FDD eNodeB depends on the traffic model in
addition to system processing capacities. This section describes two traffic models.
l Traffic model 1 derives from a typical LTE network where smartphones dominate. UEs
in this traffic model are characterized by short online duration, frequent network access
and connection release, high mobility, and a large number of small-packet data services.
l Traffic model 2 derives from a typical LTE network where data cards dominate. LTE
dongles and customer premises equipment (CPE) are examples of such data cards. UEs
in this traffic model are characterized by long online durations, low mobility, and many
large-packet data services.
Traffic models used on operator networks may differ from those defined by Huawei.
Operators can use either of the two traffic models based on network characteristics to perform
initial network planning, and construct an industry-leading LTE network through continuous
capacity monitoring and expansion.
The following table describes the control-plane specifications for traffic models 1 and 2.

Signaling Specifications of a TDD eNodeB

1 UMPTe+2 UBBPe6 1,296,000

1 UMPTe+4 UBBPe6 1,620,000

NOTE

The signaling specifications of an eNodeB cannot exceed 2,880,000 BHCA.

If the traffic model changes, the BHCA specifications of the equipment change
correspondingly.

Traffic Model
On live networks, the service capacity of a TDD eNodeB depends on system processing
capacities in addition to the traffic model used.

The following table describes the control-plane specifications for traffic models 1 and 2.
NOTE

(1): @BH means "at busy hour". Traffic models described in the table are obtained during busy hours.

Signaling Specifications
Busy Hour Call Attempts (BHCA) is the number of calls attempted at a busy hour. Signaling
procedures required for completing a call may include call setup and release (including CS
fallback if it occurs) and the following activities during the on-hold call: handover, TAU,
bearer setup and release, and switching between the in-synchronization state and the out-of-
synchronization state. BHCA indicates the signaling processing capabilities of a system.

A busy-hour call initiated on different operator networks involves different types and numbers
of signaling procedures and therefore consumes different amounts of LTE system resources.
As a result, the BHCA capability varies depending on the call model.

The following table lists the signaling specifications of an NB-IoT eNodeB with the typical
board configuration.

Table 1-63 Signaling specifications of an NB-IoT eNodeB

Board Configuration Signaling Specifications (BHCA)

NOTE

The signaling specifications of an eNodeB cannot exceed 4,860,000 BHCA.

Traffic Model
On live networks, the traffic capacity of an NB-IoT eNodeB depends on the traffic model in
addition to system processing capacities. This section describes the traffic models defined in
3GPP TR 45.820.

Capacity Specifications
The following tables list the capacity specifications of a 5900 series base station working in
GU/GL/GUL mode.

NOTE

l For GSM, GA/A/A indicates that three cells are configured and each cell has A TRXs.
l For UMTS, BxC indicates that B sectors are configured and each sector has C carriers.
l For LTE, DxE MHz indicates that D cells are configured and each cell is configured with E MHz
bandwidth.
l The capacity specifications of a UL base station are the same as those of a GUL base station.
l In typical GL/UL/GUL scenarios, LTE FDD and LTE TDD dynamically share the LTE specifications on
the main control board.
l If GSM is configured with 72 TRXs (G24/24/24), each TRX can be configured with only one SDCCH; if
GSM is configured with 24 TRXs (G8/8/8), each TRX can be configured with three SDCCHs.
l In typical GL/UL/GUL scenarios where the capacity specifications of GSM and UMTS remain
unchanged, the allocation of LTE capacity specifications of the main control board is affected after NB-
IoT is introduced. That is, LTE FDD and NB-IoT now share the original maximum number of LTE FDD
cells and UEs in RRC connected mode of the main control board.

Signaling Specifications
Table 1-75 lists the signaling specifications of a co-MPT multimode base station with typical
configurations.
NOTE

l If GSM is configured with 72 TRXs (G24/24/24), each TRX can be configured with only one
SDCCH; if GSM is configured with 24 TRXs (G8/8/8), each TRX can be configured with three
SDCCHs.
l The following specifications are met only in typical configurations. For example, the number of
SCTP links required for GSM can be reached only when the typical configuration is used.
l LTE FDD and TDD dynamically share the LTE specifications of the main control board.
l In typical GL/UL/GUL scenarios where the signaling specifications of GSM and UMTS remain
unchanged, the allocation of LTE FDD signaling specifications (BHCA) on the main control board is
affected after NB-IoT is introduced. That is, LTE FDD and NB-IoT share LTE signaling processing
specifications of the main control board. For commercial networks, it is recommended that 30% of
the signaling processing specifications be allocated to LTE NB-IoT.

In addition to highly efficient data services, the LTE network provides high quality VoLTE
services by specifying the QoS class identifier (QCI). VoLTE services are characterized by a
low data rate and a large number of regular small packets, which place high requirements on
the system processing delay and packet processing speed.
Capacity specifications of VoLTE refer to the maximum number of VoLTE UEs that can be
processed by the eNodeB when radio conditions are not considered. The following table lists
the maximum number of VoLTE UEs per BBP.

As one of the most important features in LTE-A networks, CA provides a peak data rate of 1
Gbit/s by aggregating contiguous carriers or non-contiguous carriers. A CA UE is served by a
primary component carrier (PCC) and at least one secondary component carrier (SCC).
According to the architecture and working principles of CA, a UE on its PCC consumes more
baseband processing resources than a non-CA UE performing data services, and a UE on one
of its SCCs consumes fewer baseband processing resources than a non-CA UE performing
data services.
Huawei uses model 1 to define the maximum number of CA UEs. The following table lists
the maximum number of CA UEs per BBP.

NOTE

l In traffic model 1, the value of (Number of non-CA UEs carried on a BBP + Number of PCC-served UEs
on the board x [1 + (N – 1) x 0.5] + Number of SCC-served UEs on the board x 0.5) is less than or equal
to the maximum number of UEs in RRC connected mode supported by the board. N is the number of
component carriers for CA. For example, the value of N is 2 for 2CC CA.
l The maximum number of PCC-served UEs per board cannot exceed the value listed in this table.
For example, the UBBPd3 board supports a maximum of 750 PCC-served 2CC CA UEs or 500
PCC-served 3CC CA UEs when it carries only PCC-served UEs.
l In traffic model 1, the sum of (Number of non-CA UEs + Number of PCC-served UEs + Number of
SCC-served UEs carried on a board) is less than or equal to the maximum number of UEs in RRC
connected mode on the board.

NOTE

l Hybrid configurations of 1R and 2R cells are supported. In these configurations, the total number of
cells cannot exceed the maximum number of 2R cells.
l Hybrid configurations of 1R and 4R cells or 2R and 4R cells are supported. In these configurations,
the total number of cells cannot exceed the maximum number of 4R cells.
l When the UBBPd is used to serve LTE NB-IoT cells, the maximum throughput of the board
decreases. The decrease in the maximum throughput is proportional to the decrease in the total
bandwidth of LTE cells.
l For a UBBPd/UBBPe, each LTE FDD cell can be associated with one inband LTE NB-IoT cell. (For
a UBBPd, if Standard Ratio is set to FDD_ENHANCE, FDD cells cannot share bandwidth to set
up inband NB-IoT cells.)
l Work Mode can be set to FDD_NBIOT_CUSTOM only for the LBBPd3 and LBBPd5 boards.
l For an LBBPd, each LTE FDD cell can be associated with one inband carrier. For a UBBPd/UBBPe,
each LTE FDD cell can be associated with two inband carriers. For an LBBPd, FDD cells cannot be
associated with 4T4R inband NB-IoT carriers. For a UBBPd, if Standard Ratio is set to
FDD_ENHANCE, FDD cells cannot be associated with inband NB-IoT carriers.
l For a UBBPd5/UBBPd6, if Standard Ratio is set to NBIOT_ENHANCE, the configuration of
3x400 kHz 4T4R LTE NB-IoT cells is supported. For a UBBPe6, if Standard Ratio is set to
NBIOT_ENHANCE, the configuration of 6x400 kHz 4T4R LTE NB-IoT cells is supported.

Multi-RAT
In co-BBP scenarios, the baseband signals of multiple RATs are processed by one baseband
processing board. Co-BBP specifications refer to the maximum processing capability per
baseband processing board when it processes baseband signals of multiple RATs at the same
time. For example, GL co-BBP specifications refer to the maximum processing capability per
baseband processing board when it processes GSM and LTE FDD baseband signals
simultaneously.
The following tables provide GU/GL/UL/UM/GUL/ULM co-BBP specifications.

NOTE

l For a UBBPd3/UBBPd4 board working in co-BBP mode of which the supported RATs include GSM
and LTE (for example, GL co-BBP), an LTE FDD cell cannot be associated with any inband NB-IoT
cell.
l In co-MPT scenarios, a UBBPe board can function as a GSM CPRI interface board, connecting to
RF modules that process GSM baseband signals.
l If LTE and related NB inband cells are set up on different baseband processing boards, baseband
signals can be forwarded by the UBBP but cannot be forwarded by the WBBP.
