Review about my favourite book

An American tragedy by Theodore Dreiser

……………………………………………………………………………………….
One of my favourite book is “An American tragedy” by Theodore Dreiser.
Theodore Dreiser was an American novelist and journalist. He was born in 1871 in
the USA. He represented the naturalist school. Theodore Dreiser wrote a lot of
novels and stories, which are world-known now. He often took part in different
political companies. Dreiser was a committed socialist. Dreiser died in 1945 in
Hollywood.
“An American tragedy” was published in 1925. It was his first commercial
success. The main character of this novel is Clyde Griffiths, ambitious but ill-
educated and naïve boy. He had to help his religious parents in their street
missionary work. It was very shameful for him. He tried to earn some money and
began to work. His first serious workplace was the rich hotel in his city. He made a
lot of friends, who taught them how to earn more and rest. He started to meet with
girls, but he didn’t have enough experience in it. He was very amative and girls
used his weakness. Clyde's life changes dramatically when he accepts the offer to
work at his uncle’s factory in Lycurgus. This story is about Clyde’s youth, his
dreams and hopes, his sufferings and fortune. It’s not a novel only about love like
modern women’s books. Clyde’s love is one of aspect of this story. But the other
aspects are not less interesting. Who’s read “An American tragedy” can understand
me.
Dreiser’s book is not only for teenager. I read it two years ago and I liked it very
much. That story isn’t fictitious. Dreiser based his book on a criminal case in 1906.
The writer saved newspaper clippings about the case for several years before
writing this novel. This book is about tragedy in the broad sense of these words. It
is a story that most have seen as society corrupting and destroying a young man.
This novel is really literary treasure of its time. One of the advantages is that this
book can be studied on many levels and from many points of view, like other great
stories.
