My boyfriend CAN’T remember my name

Hello. My name is Bella. My family and I live in a big city. I was

born here, I grew up here and I met my love here.
This is Drake, and yeah…he keeps forgetting my name! But what’s
even worse is that sometimes he can’t remember WHO I am. So, every
time we have to start all over again. But…let me tell you.
Drake has some health problems. It started when he was a child. In
short, my boyfriend has problems with his memory.
He has a really bad memory for people’s names even though he’s
met them more than once. Besides, he often can’t find his way home. But at
the same time, he’s doing great at school, getting all A’s. He remembers
the movies he has watched and books he has read.
Drake first came to our school when we were in the sixth grade. The
therapist suggested that full socialization might help to train his memory.
The head teacher agreed that the idea was good and asked me to be Drake’s
right-hand man.
It was interesting to me as I was a volunteer. Plus, we were
neighbors and went to the same school. I could easily accompany him
home.
I remember the first time I saw him. He was friendly and very
handsome, a real people person. He was outgoing and an excellent listener.
He told me about himself, his hobbies and interests. On the way home, we
agreed to go to school together too.
I had to get up early to do my hair. I wanted him to like me. I waited
outside his house – he didn’t show, so I decided to go upstairs. His mother
opened the door. She said Drake had already left with a classmate, Bella…
ummm…
How that could have happened?! There was only one girl in our class
named Bella. Me! I had no choice but to go to school alone. Frankly, I was
a bit confused.
When I walked into the class, Drake was chatting with our
classmates. But they didn’t seem interested at all. I heard them whispering.
There was something…
Wow! He told us the same story yesterday. Word for word, about his
family, favorite movies, jokes.
I went to him between classes to find out why he hadn’t waited for
me in the morning. Drake smiled and asked: “I’m sorry but who are you
and why did I have to wait for you?”
I thought he was kidding me. But then I realized that Drake was
really bad at remembering people’s names and faces. He forgot what he
had said the day before.
Two weeks later, my classmates got tired of hearing the same thing
so often. So, I was the only friend he had, and I did everything I could to
keep him happy.
"Hi, Drake. My name is Bella. I'm your classmate. Your parents said
that you’d recently moved and you don’t know where the school is, let me
show you”.
I met him every morning, telling about his daily life, our school and
myself. Drake wasn’t alone as I always helped him find the men’s locker
room, cafeteria or remember the teacher’s names. But for others, it was
weird. They didn’t want to spend time with Drake.
Frankly speaking, I also got tired of repeating everything over and
over again. Sometimes I made up all sorts of stories. I mean, I changed
names or some facts. Once, I told him that I was a millionaire’s daughter,
the other day that I was an orphan. And he believed. But what really
surprised me was that Drake remembered all the history topics we had
discussed in class or the dialogue between the main characters in “Pride
and prejudice”. All right, I had to say I was impressed.
Those months seemed like an eternity. I was extremely tired of
talking to Drake. He was nice, but annoying. And I was really looking
forward to my holidays: nothing to worry about, and lots of free time! Until
the beginning of the next school year, of course…
Luckily, on the first day and the whole week, Drake wasn’t at school.
Weeks went by, but he didn’t show up… Now I was getting a little
anxious. When I went to his house, I found out he moved.
The headteacher said Drake was taken to a very good hospital. It was
an opportunity to be examined and even cured. At home, I realized I missed
him. When I looked at our photos, I felt happy nostalgia. Even those
annoying questions like “What’s your name?” or “Where do you live?”
weren’t so annoying anymore…
Years passed; I was stressed-out studying for my finals when I heard
a familiar voice: “Excuse me, may I join you?”. I was speechless…
“What’s your name?”, he looked at me and smiled.
“Bella”, I said like a few years ago.
“I’m Drake. Nice to meet you”.
It was him! Drake became even more handsome. He told me about
the diagnosis, hospital, and the time he had studied here. I was ready to tell
him everything, but I stopped.
I saw him the next day at school. I spent all my time with him,
repeating my name and listening to his stories over and over again. We
were always together.
We passed our final exams and entered the same university. I became
the closest friend to him and his family. They took care of me and even had
my photos around the house. We made funny videos so that Drake could
remember me. And, you know, it worked. Sometimes Drake remembered
my name for days. And those were the happiest days of our lives!
Once Drake decided to go home on his own. I took the exam that
day, so I believed everything would be ok. It was our daily way home.
I got an A. I ran into a pastry shop to buy a cake and celebrate it with
Drake’s family. But when I got home, I saw Drake’s mother sitting in the
kitchen with the phone in her hand.
“Where were you? And where is Drake?”, she screamed.
I didn’t know what to say. Drake didn’t come home. I just said that
we had a fight and he called a taxi.
We looked for him everywhere, until nightfall. Then we called the
police. It was my fault! I couldn’t eat and sleep. Why did I let him go off
by himself? I decided to tell the truth to Drake's parents. But we got a call.
The police found him in the hospital.
We immediately went to the hospital to see him. The doctor said
Drake was hit on the head and lost consciousness. He was in a coma. It was
hard. He could lose his memory forever. We visited him every day, talked
to him, but Drake didn’t open his eyes. And the doctors didn’t give us
much hope.
It was Drake’s birthday and I brought a laptop to the hospital. We
spent all day with him watching photos and videos. We were one big,
happy family. I was exhausted, and everything kept getting worse. Not so
long ago, I met the best guy in our school. And now I could only watch
videos from my twenties and remember those moments. I turned to him and
saw that he was awake.
Dad called for a doctor, and mom started crying. But you know what
was most wonderful? Drake looked at me and said: “Hi, Bella. I remember
you”.
Now we are fine. Drake was discharged from the hospital. His
memory has actually improved. We can’t say that everything is perfect, but
the worst is over. Drake trains his memory a lot. And since then, he hasn’t
forgotten about me. Thanks for watching!
