Money Sense For Kids

This is Dean’s house.

This is Dean.
This is Timothy. Dean and Timothy are good friends.
Dean was in his room playing with his new friend Timothy.
Timothy glanced around Dean’s room and was puzzled when he
saw several jars of money.
Dean saw Timothy’s confused face and explained to Timothy
that when he was younger, his father had the followed his
father’s tradition of making sure that his son was aware of the
importance of allocating and separating money.
Dean looked at Timothy’s still confused face and said, “Maybe
the best way for you to understand is if I show you.”
Dean took out his whiteboard and drew a £10 note. “If your
parents were to give you £10, what would you do with it?”
Timothy paused and then said, “I’m not sure, maybe I would
buy something nice to play with or something tasty to eat.”
Dean continued to explain, “Indeed, you could spend it all. But
my father taught me that if you have jars, you can segregate and
allocate your money to several important and different things.”
“Like what?” Timothy asked.

Dean replied, “Well you could allocate your £10 into five
separate jars. One jar could be for Tithe and you could allocate
£1.”
Timothy interrupted to ask what the tithe is. Dean paused and
said, “The best way for me to explain is to say it’s a contribution
from what you have produced. In the past, the grownups would
have followed the law and given away some of their grain or
wine.”

“I think I understand, it’s a bit like the money envelope my

parents would give to the priest during Sunday Mass,” Timothy
said.
Dean smiled, “Let me continue. A second jar could be for
offerings and you could again allocate another £1. The third jar
could be for savings and you could allocate £1. The fourth jar
could be for investments and you could allocate £2.
Timothy interrupted, “Why £2 and not £1 like the others?”
Dean smiled, “Because it is hoped that your money in the
investments would multiply and grow, so £2 is a good amount to
allocate. Let me continue. As there is one more jar, the fifth jar,
this would be for spending and you could allocate £5.”
Timothy smiled and added, “I don’t need to question why, I’m
just glad you can spend a whole £5.”
Timothy looked at the jars, “I like how your jars are labelled so
you can remember what each jar is for and you can see all that
money.”
Later, when Timothy returned home, he told his mum about the
jars and how it sounded like a beneficial idea for everyone, not
just for children.
Timothy asked his mum if he could have several jars so he too
could segregate his money.
Timothy’s mum got the jars for Timothy and added, “I’ve given
you a pen and paper as well.”
v Timothy was thrilled when he saw that his mum had also given
him some money to get started.
Timothy smiled and said, “I love you Mum.”

Timothy’s mum smiled and replied, “I love you too Timothy.”
