Example spli ng a part using 3D Builder.

By MH Kao, 2019

Start 3D Builder:

This free program is included in Windows 10. it can also be found in the Microso store.

For this example we will split this part in 3 sec ons and pin them:

Split the part

Use Object → Split. Select “Keep both”

Move the plane to where you want to make the cut. You can grab the plane to move it.
Here the plane cuts more than we want, but we’ll correct that later.

We make two cuts in total so we have three sec ons, one of which has three parts.

Set the pins

Turn on x-ray so we can see the placement of the pins

Create the pin by inser ng a cylinder. Then use the modifica on tools to scale it down to size.
Place the pin at the first split. 3D Builder will help placing it in the middle.

Duplicate the pin

Place the new pin at the second split.

Duplicate both pins and place the new pins outside of the model. We will need them later.
Select one of the pins in the part and select Edit - Substract

This creates a hole in the parts. Do the same with the other pin in the part.

Now, move the pins you duplicated into the same place as the original pins.
Now select the part in which you want to have the pins and the pins themselves.

Merge the parts

You should now have three parts le

Fixing the parts

In the picture above the sec on in the le top corner has two parts that belong to the bo om
one. To fix this, select the top le part and split it twice so you have three separate sec ons.

Merge these two parts with the middle sec on.

Done
All done. Export as stl for further processing.

Note, 3D prin ng is not that precise if it comes to pin/holes. You can either fix this a er prin ng using
a drill, or you can make the pins that create the holes in 3Dbuilder a li le thicker and longer than the
pins used for connec ng.
