Source 1: Landforms
When you are traveling, you may notice changes in the
way the land looks. Some places are flat and have rivers
running through them. Some are mountainous with waterfalls
and lakes. Some places are flat valleys. These different
landforms were created in several different ways.
Some landforms are created by glaciers. Glaciers are
thick pieces of ice that are 200– to 300–feet thick. The bottoms
of the glaciers are like slick plastic that allows them to slide. As
they slide, they actually cut the surface of the earth like a big
shovel. As the air warms up a little, glaciers move down
mountains, cutting them and forming valleys. As the ice melts, it
creates rivers and lakes.
Waves along the ocean create landforms along the
coast. Hills along the coast often appear to have broken off into
the sea. Many of them were actually washed off by huge waves.
In some places, landforms are made by wind. In some
deserts, wind is so strong that it actually causes sand and dust particles to wear away rocks and mountains. This
changes the way they look.
Next time you see a mountain, a lake, or a valley, think about how it got there. It's fun to imagine how the
land might have looked millions of years ago.

Directions: Answer the following question(s) relating to the passage titled "Source 1:  Landforms /
Source 2:  Earthquakes and Landforms ".
Source 2: Earthquakes and Landforms
Earthquakes are responsible for the creation of many parts of the Earth's surface. Earthquakes are caused
by a quick movement of rock below the surface. This causes a violent shaking of the earth. When an earthquake
occurs, it causes parts of the earth to rise. Eventually, these parts create landforms known as hills and mountains.
Since its beginning, the Earth has continued to have earthquakes. As a result, the way mountains look
today will continue to change. Some will grow in size; others will break apart and form different looking landforms.
