ABSTRACT

This research presents calculation, study and analyzing the fault level of three
phase and single phase currents for distribution substations in Khartoum area,
using the Neplan v555, according to IEC 60909-2011standard. This study was
applied to 48 substations (86 busbar 33kv and 91 Busbar 11kv). Data were then
collected from the substations, which are the design values of the substations
components (busbars, switches and transformers) and compared with the
calculated values from the simulation program, to be sure the substations will bear
the short circuit currents.
The maximum value of the fault level was found at Almugran substation in the
33kv busbar of the transformer 1 and the transformer 2, which is initial single-
phase to ground current with a value of 40.62KA for transformers 1, 41.82KA for
transformers 2, and the peak current 98.95KA for transformers 1 and 102.41KA for
transformers 2. The design values of the initial fault current are 31.5kA and the
peak fault current is 80KA. The grounding resistance of the transformers is added
at 10 ohms to the both transformers, as is known the transformer capacity is
100MVA, because the grounding is direct connected.
We recalculated after resistance addition we get the initial short circuit current
12.9KA instead of 40.62KA next to adapter 1, 13.46KA instead of 41.82KA for
adapter 2, and we got the peak fault current of 30.91KA instead of 98.95KA at
transformer 1 side and 32.95KA Instead of 102.41KA at transformer 2 side, so
these values become much small than the design values of the substations and thus
ensure the safety of the substations equipment when these currents occur.
A 0.35kA is smallest value of the fault level of a single-phase to ground short
circuit current, found in the 11kv busbar at Aldowaly substation, Altsnee
substation (transformer 2) and Almlayzi substation.
A comparison was made between the calculated values and the recorded values in
the protection device for three substations (Abu Adam , Jabbra and Almodrat ) and
the percentage of error are 4%, 7% and 4%.
