Machine Learning for Business Professionals

Week 2 Day 7
Activity: Learn how to use the What-If Tool, a tool for inspecting
machine learning models for fairness considerations.
We will learn how to:
1. Use the What-If tool
2. Visualize the predictions of a machine learning model
3. Explore misclassification of a model
4. Consider the model under different fairness constraints

The visualization shows 500 datapoints which represent a 500-person

sample of the UCI Census Income dataset. The model predicts whether
someone earns more than $50K per year based on individual
characteristics such as income, race, sex, and education. Those circles
in red are the individuals predicted to have an income greater than 50K,
while those in blue are those predicted to have an income less than or
equal to 50K.
Task 1. To explore fairness consideration, click the Performance
Fairness tab on the left. Under the Compare Slices Fairness Metrics, first
select race under Slice by, then select sex under Slice by
Task 2. Under Optimize sliced thresholds for, click on Group unaware.
What happens to the threshold for each group? How does the
visualization on the right change?
Task 3. Click Demographic parity
Task 4. Click Equal opportunity.

Lastly concluding the Module 3 with a 3 Question quiz for evaluation.
