 The International

Telecommunications Union (ITU) uses

an agreed set of codes or designations
to easily and succinctly describe a
format and modulation for a radio
transmission.
 Radio
Emission Types Designators
Format

➢The first symbol is a letter that designates

the type of modulation of the main carrier.
➢The second symbol is a number that
identifies the type of modulating signal.
➢The third symbol is another letter that
describes the type of information being
transmitted.
❖ Character 1 – Type of Modulation

➢This character describes the format for

the modulation itself.
➢It provides information about the way
in which the signal is superimposed
into the carrier.
❖ Character 2 – Type of Modulating
Signal

➢It provides information including

whether the modulation is analog or
digital and whether there is one
channel of information or more being
carried
❖ Character3 – Type of Transmitted
Information

➢It provides some insight into the use

and the way in which the information
may be decoded.
MODULATING SIGNAL
TRANSMITTED INFORMATION
Example:

For a 500-W carrier modulated to a

depth of 80%, find the total power in
each of the following forms of Am.
a. A3E
b. H3A
