In addition to playing the excerpts alone, learning this repertoire in a trumpet section can help players more-quickly develop skills in transposition, tuning, blend and balance: all of which are necessary in mastering the repertory of the professional orchestra musician, In my 35 years of university teaching, I have been continually frustrated by the lack of completeness and notation accuracy in the commonly-used orchestral excerpt books for trumpet. Naturally, using complete orchestral parts is generally more reliable but is not always prac especially when each student is assigned all of the trumpet parts of a particular work. HME*s decision to publish Essential Orchestral Excerpts comes from this frustration, Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski, one of my talented graduate teaching assistants (2002-4) completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Arizona State University and based much of his, ork on the study and editing of orchestral excerpts. His dissertation, The Most Requested Trumpet Excerpts From The Orchestral Repertoire, include the compilation, editing, and notation of important trumpet and cornet passages from 137 orchestral works. He chose these works because of their frequency in orchestra auditions, concert performances, and overall difficulty. My students and I carefully proofread each excerpt, and they are presented here as accurately as is possible. Due to the difficulty and length of time needed to acquire licenses for reprinting music currently under copyright, not all works in Dr. Dobrzelewski’s dissertation are included in HME’s first 11 volumes of excerpts. HME will publish additional volumes of important works as licenses are obtained. I would like to thank Mr. Derek Reaban for his work in compiling the historical listings of principal trumpet players and current trumpet section rosters of many of the leading orchestras around the world, In addition, I would like to acknowledge Mr. Gary Leopold for providing a selected bibliography of articles concerning orchestral trumpeters, trumpet sections, and other trumpet-related topics. Each volume contains a portion of the materials provided by these two gentlemen. David R, Hickman Regents’ Professor of Trumpet Arizona State University Dr. Jean-Christophe Dobrzelewski was bor in Costa Rica and grew up in Switzerland where he studied trumpet with Jean-Frangois Michel and Vanca Samonikov. In 1997, he joined the class of Eric Aubier at the Conservatory of Rueil-Malmaison in Paris and graduated in 2000 with a Prix and Highest Honors. During his studies in France, Dobrzelewski was a prize winner in the International Trumpet Competition “Selmer” (Paris), He ‘went on to earn a Master of Music degree at the University of Maine where he studied with Joshua Whitchouse, In addition to his principal teachers, Dobrzelewski has studied with Dr. Edward Tarr, Guy Touvron, Max Sommerhalter, Wolfgang Bauer, Emery Harvison, and Samuel Pilafian. In 2002-04, he served as a Graduate ‘Trumpet Teaching Assistant to David Hickman at Arizona State University where he received his Doctor of Musical ‘Arts degree. Dr. Dobrzelewski has released two compact dises for the Swiss label, AMIE Records, and has been Co- Principal Trumpet of the Midland-Odessa Symphony and Lone Star Brass. In addition, he is an active recitalist and clinician, having performed over 150 recitals in Switzerland, Costa Rica, Salvador, France, and the United States.
