Job Mission

 The Onboard Trainers’ main purpose is to carry out training (by transfer knowledge,
best practices, company standards and in general their experience) in accordance with
this Job Description and in accordance with the training scope as defined by the
company during visits onboard/enroute, in periods ideally 10-14 days.
 The Onboard Trainers’ secondary purpose is to utilize time onboard to perform Internal
Audits, Internal Navigation audit, Ship Inspection and assist during external inspections
or other tasks on request from office.

Job General Responsibilities

Continuously:
 Participate in and take a lead in development, review and updates of onboard training
program.
 Keep an open dialogue and share internal learning/best practices related to the training
visits as appropriate to ensure alignment of the training.
 Stay in dialogue with both office and sea staff to obtain feedback on the programs and
initiate needful improvements.
 Familiarize and keep up-to-date with applicable national/international rules and
regulations, industry requirements.
 Actively participate in the development of the quality management system and engage
in the process for the continuous improvement.
 Participate in and take lead in development, review and updates of onboard training
program.
 Stay in dialogue with both office and sea staff to obtain feedback on the programs and
initiate needful improvements.
 Participate or take a leading role in campaigns
 Contribute to ENE project activities onboard in agreement with line manager.

Pre-visit:
 HSEQ department to identify vessel passage suitable for visit by review of position list
and visit history and further in liaison with vessel’s Technical/Marine Superintendents,
Master and Onboard Trainer.
 Onboard Trainer to be advised vessel visit plans by HSEQ department.
 Onboard Trainer to plan the visit in close dialogue with Master, Technical/Marine
Superintendents and HSEQ department to establish the purpose of the visit and to
optimize/tailor the training plan for the particular visit.

During visit:
 Prepare and perform onboard training sessions according to agreed program. Training
methods (ref “Training and assessment on board, 4th ed.”, by Holder, L.A. Witherby
Seamanship International) utilized includes but not limited to:
o On-the-job training
o Monitoring and later debrief (mandatory each visit: Mooring fwd/aft and Bridge
Team)
o Class room style presentations/lectures.
o Individual assignment
o Open dialogue with Master on identified crew appraisal / coaching needs.
o Incident investigations and root cause analysis to be carried out on request from
HSEQ Department.
o Internal Audit and/or Ship Inspection to be carried out on request from HSEQ
Department.
o Internal Navigation Audit on request from Nautical Department.
o Assist during external inspections/audits.
o Other agreed tasks agreed with office (e.g. DryDock Safety Officer, etc)
o Ensure that records of training performed onboard is done properly
o Closing meeting and issue of Taproot refresher training diploma.

Post-visit:
 Visit report to be sent Master for retention onboard, describing the completed training
program and participants each session. Marine/Technical Superintendent and HSEQ to
be notified about the report.
 Separate update by phone to Marine/Technical Superintendent and further follow-up
actions agreed.
 The Onboard Trainer will normally not directly involve in crew evaluation/appraisal, but
will relay relevant information to the Master. If deemed necessary, the Onboard Trainer
will also relay same information as relevant to Fleet Manager, Head of Marine, Vetting
and Security, or DPA.
 Comments on Master/Chief Engineer for inclusion in Appraisal shall be entered in the
appropriate form. Master/Chief Engineer to be notified by the Onboard Trainer
regardless nature of the comment.
 At the end of the training cycle (appr 10 wks) and/or before new training cycle, visit to
office to present summary of training and improvement areas identified during last
cycle.

Specific Job Responsibilities

 Assess the current level of safety culture onboard and address areas of weakness
identified.
 Reinforce the company safety initiatives, campaigns and programmes
 Provide training//mentoring as required
 Review and confirm that bridge practices are in compliance with the international

regulations and company procedures.


 Review and asset the skills and proficiency levels of the bridge team members
 Review and evaluate the effective functioning of the bridge team during all sections of
voyage
 Use the opportunity to promote robust navigational practices, cg¡hart-work, passage
planning and good seamanship.
 Identify any additional training needs, whether this be specific to an individual or a
vessel or a fleet vessel type.
 Verify adequate supervision of Junior Officers and training of cadets during critical
passages.
 Verify that accurate logs are kept and that adequate record keeping is being
undertaken.

Competences
 Well experienced seafarer, with seagoing experience as a certified Master or Chief
Mate on LNG Carriers
 Committed to the safety culture
 Conversant with the SMS; understanding of the ISM code and legal framework.
 Familiar with ISO certifications (9001-14001-45001-50001)
 Familiar with TMSA
 Familiar with Incidents Investigation
 Works well under pressure.
 Fluent in English and Spanish (spoken and written)
