Σa =79.3 Σm =144.8 ΣI =365.2

Common interval, h = 2.5 m

Area of bulkhead, A = h/3 x Σa = 2.5/3 x 79.3 = 66.1 m2

First moment of area of bulkhead about top of bulkhead = h2 /3 x Σm

= 2.52 /3 x 144.8

= 301.7

Second moment of area of bulkhead about top of bulkhead = h3/3 x ΣI

= 2.53/3 x 365.2

= 1902
Centre of pressure from top of bulkhead = Second moment of area / First
moment of area

= h x ΣI / Σm

= 2.5 x 365.2 / 144.8

= 6.3 m

Thrust on bulkhead = ϱ xg x A x h where h = Centre of pressure from surface of

liquid

= 1.025 x 9.81 x 66.1 x (6.3+2)

= 5516.6 KN

52.Explain Leading edge and Trailing edge of propeller.

Leading and Trailing Edges of a blade

Leading Edge
The edge of the propeller blade adjacent to the forward end of the hub. When
viewing the propeller from astern, this edge is furthest away. The leading edge
leads into the flow when providing forward thrust.

Trailing Edge
The edge of the propeller adjacent to the aft end of the hub. When viewing the
propeller from astern, this edge is closest. The trailing edge retreats from the flow
when providing forward thrust.

53.Explain Radius and Diameter of propeller.

Radius
The distance from the axis of rotation to the blade tip.
Diameter
Diameter is two times the distance from the center of the hub to the tip of the
blade. It can also be looked at as the distance across the circle that the propeller
would make when rotating. This is the first number listed when describing a
propeller.
54. Position of zero shear for a bulkhead stiffener, when bulkhead has liquid on
one side to the top edge, will be at _________ from the top.

Ans: l/31/2 where l is the length of the stiffener.

55. Describe ‘Voith Schneider’ Propeller.

VERTICAL AXIS PROPELLERS
The Voith-Schneider propeller is typical of a vertical axis propeller and consists of
a series of vertical blades set into a horizontal rotor which rotate about a vertical
axis. The rotor is flush with the bottom of the ship and the blades project down as
shown in Fig.

VOITH SCHNEIDER PROPELLER

The blades are linked to a control point P by cranked control rods. When P is in
the centre of the disc, the blades
rotate without producing a thrust. When P is moved away from the centre in any
direction, the blades turn in the totor out of line with the blade orbit and a thrust
is produced. The direction and magnitude of the thrust depends upon the
position of P. Since P can move in any direction within its inner circle, the ship
may be driven in any direction and at varying speeds. Thus the Voith Schneider
may propel and manoeuvre a ship without the use of a rudder.

The efficiency of a Voith Schneider propeller is relatively low but it has the
advantage of high manoeuvrability and is useful in harbour craft and ferries. Two
or more installations may be fitted and in special vessels (e.g., firefloats), can
move the ship sideways or rotate it in its own length.

Replacement of damaged blades is simple although they are fairly susceptible to

damage. A tubular guard is usually fitted to protect the blades. The propeller may
be driven by a vertical axis motor seated on the top or by a diesel engine with a
horizontal shaft converted into vertical drive by a bevel gear unit.
