I especially congratulate the founder of the Department, Prof. Dr. Nadeem Feroze who seeded this plant and after four years of continuous struggle, it has grown enough to benefit. the engineering community. By the ‘grace of Allah, the Department is producing high quality Chemical Engineers which is the tue requirement of market. With the growing need of technologists in the industry, the Department has started B.Sc. in Chemical Technology to fulfill the demand of technologists in the country. First batch of the program was inducted in 2009. I warmly welcome the students of B.Sc. Chemical Engineering -2011 and B.Sc. Chemical Technology-2011. We have designed the curriculum of B.Sc. Chemical Technology in such a way that the students must spend final year of the academic program in the industry to lea the applications of the technical directions of | acquired knowledge. Being the Campus Coordinator and Chairman of Chemical, Polymer and ‘Composite Materials. Engineering Department, I welcome Dr, Tanveer Iqbal and Dr. Saima Yasin on joining the Department after_ completing, their Doctorate degree from Imperial College — London. The motivation behind the preparation of this magazine is to promote the academic and non-academic activities in the Department and share them with the community, so that we can give our best to the society in the form of high quality engineers presented in this issue indicates the extensive progress of the Department during last six months and few memorable events before that. I pay my special gratitude to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Noon who inspired, encouraged and guided us throughout the preparation of this Magazine. 1 also gratify the support of all faculty members and students because without their cooperation, this task was incomplete: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Noon departments of KSK Campus due to its young and qualified faculty, well maintained laboratory equipments and library. Saleemi who retired from UET Lahore as Dean of Faculty of Chemical, Mineral and Metallurgical Engineering. Farecome was arranged at Tabaq M. M. Alam Road, Lahore. Prof. Dr. Nadeem Feroze (Ex- Chairman of the Department), Prof. Dr. Naveed Ramzan (Main Campus) and Dr. Muhammad Asif & Dr. Kashif Rehan (Department of Basie Sciences and Humanities) also attended the farecome. Prof. Dr. Muhammad Zafar Noon and Prof. Dr. Nadeem Feroze presented Prof. Dr. A. R. Salemi with a bouquet. Prof. Dr. Saleemi served the University for over 35 years and has left a legacy in research work which has impacted the country during his tenure as well as after it. He has designed a Baffle for gas fired geysers for SNGPL to enhance the heat utilization from combustion which would reduce energy losses during winters. The Department also welcomes Prof. Dr. A. R Salemi into its faculty. He has been hired after retirement on the Gas Engineering Chair provided by SNGPL to the University. Dr. Saleemi is teaching Engineering Management and Environmental Engineering to the Session 2008. First session of the Department was inducted in October 2007 and 35 students were enrolled. First year classes were conducted in main campus then shified to KSK campus where the students got a chance to work in newly established and well furnished laboratories, Now within few months of graduation nearly all students of this session have started working in highly reputed industries like DESCON Engineering Ltd., Fatima Fertilizers Ltd., Pak Arab Fertilizers Ltd., FFC, Pak-Arab oil refinery (PARCO), Ibrahim Fibers Ltd We wish them more success in life. The program was launched to respond to the growing needs from Universities in South Asia to promote research activities and exchange high-level resources with Japanese personnel in From seven South Asian countries (Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Seri Lanka) total 15 members were selected for the program and it is a great honor for the Department that Ms. Jawaeria was selected from Pakistan. Duration of this program was from October 16 to October 29, 2011 in Japan (Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto). Chapter stands associated with 80 local members and 30 international members. Mr. Muneeb Soban Rathore has been selected for PhD in Energy and Environmental Engineering for the year 2012. Every year only a few hundred candidates are selected worldwide and it is a great honour forthe Department that its faculty is competent to the extent to win such awards, The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan conducts interviews on behalf of Fulbright and shortlists candidates based on a number of criteria such as GRE and TOEFL scores, academic background, teaching and research experience, and the research area and proposal Fulbright emphasizes on research proposals that would not only be beneficial for the world but also for the country of origin itself. Continuous Professional Development Lecture: Experience Sharing from GM, Sitara Chemical Industries Ltd Teo ennance technical skills and knowledge of the students, Department invited Engineer Ejaz. Minhas, General Manager Maintenance Sitara Chemical Industries Ltd on Oct 10,2011. He shared his industrial experience with the students. Engr. Minhas graduated in Chemical Engineering from UET Lahore. He started his career as a lecturer in the Department but later on he switched his job to the industry, During his lecture he persuaded students to not only concentrate on their studies but Lecture on Personal Effectiveness: a Tool to gain Success in Professional Life Personal ettectveness is often conceived as a set of, competences, capabilities or qualities. For personality development of their final year students, the Department organized a lecture on personal effectiveness on October 15, 2011. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Ahmed Tahir who is working as an HR business Partner at Descon Engineering Ltd. During his lecture he also participate in healthy co- curricular activities. He advised to read English newspaper regularly. According to him, an engineer should be well communicated, well behaved and fully aware of his obligations. He elaborated the importance of assigned duties and strengthened his view with the quote: “There should be no, no in your life, you will go igher in your career.” Students leant a ot from the lecture regarding professional life. emphasized on the importance of personality factor for a successful professional life to improve one’s personality in order to become a competent individual, Students were grateful to the Chairman and managing authorities of the Department for organizing such a lecture that self motivated them so they may step in to their practical lives confidently. To nurture the students’ technical skills, the Department organized a lecture on Plant construction and services on October 15, 2011 and the expertise of Engineer Sharaf Javed were utilized. He is a Business Development Engineer at Descon Engineering Ltd. Engr Sharf Javed elaborated the fields of Chemical Engineering and asserted that Process, Design and Cost engineering have more market, He also explained hiring methodology of Descon Engineering Limited. December 3, 2011, AIChE Student Chapter KSK organized one day training session on P6. Students of 2nd, 3rd and final year were enrolled for the workshop. It was instructed by Engr. Rana Ahmed Raza who is a Civil Engineer from UET Taxila and is working in the field of Planning & Estimation in Etimaad Engineering ( Pvt) Ltd Workshop was held at Axtcre student Chapter KSK da workshop on application and resume writing on 14th December 2011 in the Department. AIChE invited Engr. Sharique Naeem from Pakistan Progressive Association (PPA) to conduct the workshop. The Department believes in the quality of engineering cannot be satisfied without practical training inthe industrial environment. Therefore it offered internship opportunity to students of 2nd year and 3rd year through “Industrial Training Program Summer-2011”, The Program was successfully completed Session 2008 Visit Attock Refinery Limited (ARL) Siucenss of session 2008 isited Attock Refinery Limited under the supervision’ of Engr. Muhammad Raashid. ARL is the pioneer of crude oil refining in the country. ARL management was highly cooperative towards students, The students leant the under the supervision of Engr. Asif Nadeem Tabish (Internship Incharge/Lecturer) and more than 50 students availed internship opportunity for 4-6 weeks in various well reputed industries and research organizations. A copy of internship report and certificate was submitted to internship incharge and best reports. were_—_especially appreciated. ‘The __ students completed their internships in the following renowned companies: Fouji Fertilizer Co. Lid (FFC) Pak-American Fertilizers functioning of _—Two-Stage- Distillation Unit, Thermal Cracker, Lubricating Oil Refinery and Wax Purification, Solvent Extraction unit for smoke-point correction of Kerosene and Catalytic Reformer. They also visited quality control lab. of ARL. One Week Industrial Tour of Session 2007 Accorting to UET rituals, final year students of Session 2007 visited Abbotabad under the supervision of Engr. A.N. Tabish and Engr. Muhammad Raashid. It was a one week Industrial . In phase-I, the tour was planned to visit OGDCL (Dakhni Oil field), Khawaja Flat Glass Industries and Bestway Cement Hatter Haripur.t was very hot day when students arrived at Dakhni Oil field. But after visiting the plant, delicious and appetizing lunch energized the students to continue according to the plan. Here she secured Ist position in ‘All Punjab Inter- Universities Essay Writing competition’ held at UMT Lahore on October 10, 2011. Topic of essay was ‘Role of Students in Development of Pakistan’.
