DNA TECHNOLOGY AND GENETIC ENGINEERING

Journal Presentation and Critiquing

DNA technology is an interesting field in the modern Biological Science as it utilizes the molecular and
genetic approach in analyzing, detecting, and treating various diseases. Several specific techniques have
Background

been used by scientists in engaging to this kind of technology. For one, the most commonly used genetic
technology is the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to study not just the human gene, but as well as the
genes of other living entities in the world. Through these various tools being used today, scientists and
medical professionals are now capable of responding to the medical needs of people who are suffering
from illnesses that were once untreatable. Collectively, these scientific research and technological
advancements are powerful tools to sustain life on earth.

Present and critique ONE SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE; the main points are as follows:
Objectives

o To be able to analyze and critique with mastery the DNA technology/genetic engineering tool used
to detect or treat a disease known to affect a specific human body system.
o To be able to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the DNA technology/genetic
engineering tool used and cite possible alternative methods/technique from the one used in the
chosen scientific article.

Learners are to work by group consisting of 6-7 members (or depending on the class size). Groupings
and specific deadlines per class will be facilitated according to the discretion of both BIOLOGY and
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY teachers, since this will be an INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE TASK
for both Learning Areas.

PART A: SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE RESEARCH

 Each group must initially choose/search for a DNA technology or genetic engineering tool.
 Using the internet, learners must be able to come up with one scientific article which:
o discusses the method on how the researchers showcase/utilize the DNA technology or genetic
engineering tool in detecting/treating a human body system disease (from your AnaPhy).
o discusses the benefits and limitations of the technology.
 The main scientific article must be recently published (year 2015 up). Supporting articles/references
Guidelines/Instruction

may also be used.

PART B: PRESENTATION OF THE ARTICLE

 The medium to be used in presenting and critiquing is either through a WEB SITE or an ANIMATED
POWERPOINT PRESENTATION.
 The following must be included in the website/presentation:
o Discuss the principle of DNA technology or engineering tool used; the application of such tool to
detect/treat a specific disease and possibly application in fields other than medicine
o Methodology from the article
 Summary: how the specific DNA technology works
 Critique: recommended alternative methods, the advantages and disadvantages of the
DNA technology/genetic engineering tool used
o Summary of the results and discussion from the article
o References
 SUBMISSION INSTRUCTION [via Drive, or Blackboard, or email] AND DEADLINE TO BE
ANNOUNCED. (But most probably by the last week of March)
 Learners must send a copy of their chosen article to the subject teacher prior to (at least one week
before) presentation.
 No two or more groups shall have the same DNA technology or engineering tool chosen.
