• It was popularized in 1911 by H. A. Des
Voeux’s report to the Manchester Conference of the Smoke Abatement League of Great Britin on more than 1000 death due to smog in Glasgow and Edinburgh during the autumn of 1909. • There are two types of smog 1. Summer smog 2. Winter smog • This type of smog formed during summer season in the presence of extensive sunlight. • It is also known as photochemical smog • It contains nitrogen oxide, nitrogen dioxide and volatile organic compounds as primary pollutants • Ozone and peroxyacyl nitrates as present as secondary pollutants in summer smog. • It is yellowish grey in colour • Yellow colour of summer smog is due to presence of oxidants in it. It is also known as oxidizing smog. • This type of smog formed during winter season
• It is formed by the emission of various
components from burning coal and other fossil fuels which are used to warm places.
• It contains high concentration of sulphur
dioxide due to which it is also known as reducing smog. Smog causes dangerous effects to health. It particularly affects children, senior citizens and people with heart and lung disorders. Health effects by smog include • Decreased lung’s working capacity • Cause shortness of breath • Pain during deep inhaling • Wheezing and coughing • Eye and nose irritation • Interferes with bodies immunity Cities which are mostly affected by smog include 1. Beijing 2. Canada 3. Delhi 4. Lahore 5. Los Angeles 6. Mexico 7. Tehran • There should be ban on use of coal and other pollutants generating agents
