o th e r w om en to t r y to change law s and custom s. In 1848 wom en
fro m a ll o v e r th e c o u n try m et to discuss w o m en ’s rig h ts . A f t e r
t h e ir m e e tin g w h e re a ll m en and w om en w e re d e cla re d eq u al,
wom en began to speak p u b lic ly about th e ir rig h ts : th e r ig h t to own
and sell p ro p e rty , to get ed u catio n , to w o rk a t a n y job o r in an y
pro fession , to vo te; in fa c t to be equal w ith m en.
M a n y yea rs passed before w om en began to receive these rig h ts .
M a n y w om en u nderstood th e y had to w o rk to g eth e r fo r th e rig h ts
of a ll people, be th e y b lack o r w h ite , m en o r w om en, slaves o r free.
