EU NOVEMBER 1996 DeZURIK -VDS Vatve Diacnostics SYSTEM a DeZURIK VDS -— Valve Diagnostics System The DeZURIK VDS Valve Diagnostics System examines control yalve perfor- miance fn oreler to improve procuctiv- ity and product quality in process control. By measuring critical aspects of control valve performance, the system identifies valves that deviate from the optimum accuracy, speed of response or overshoot. This portable diagnostic tool allows the flexibility to conduct valve performance bench- marking anytime: under operating conditions, during process shutdown, or in the instrument shop, The test results allow maintenance depart- ments to concentrate their priorities on valves that most improve produc- uvity or end-preduct quality. Targeted uci Cu By using the diagnostic system. valves no longer have to be randomly picked for rebuild or maintenance during routine shutdowns. This system allows valves to be tested in-line to evaluate performance parameters. Only the valves with perfor- mance deviations need to be scheduled for matnte- nance and removed from the line. After maintenance is complete, the diagnostics system can be used to verify aceuraey and performance e re-installing ¢ system develops and saves performance results, or response signature, of each control vaive which ean be used to compare with future analysis results. Fl oketnol Computer System This self-contained system inchades the computer, monitor, and signal condi Uoners which are all pro- tected by an aluminum. industrial-grade case. The 486 indusirial-grade com- puter has 16 MB RAM for high-speed data collection and information manage- ment. The 3-1/2" floppy drive allows archive data to be stored on a diskette. In addition to operating on 117 volt ac power, the diagnos- ties system contains its own 12, volt battery power supply for remote operation. The system contains all connec- tions to the valve; 25' cables are standard with 25) exten- sions available, Service Options The self-contained diagnos fies system can be pur chased as a complete pack- age, leased on a daily rate, or provided as a service by trained DeZURIK technicians, Highly skilled DeZURIK personnel are available to provide diagnos- tic testing services or con duct in-plant training, Sees Allows Testing of ae ‘The system comes complete with a Set of shaft rotation measuring tools to allew testing of valves with shaft diameters from 3/8" to 2-1/2". The system can be used to test any manufac- turers’ valves with either singlc-acting or double- acting actuators. Standard positioner adapters are for all PMV models; adapter tools for other manufactur- ers’ positioners are available on application, Ard Recognized etched An alarm feature in the test system warns operators when the valve does not respond to the initial signal in the standard test, indicat ing that the valve carmot complete a 2% step. The system includes a separate set of test parameters that can be performed in this sit uation. Stringent Test Paramet ‘The standard test parame- ters measure the valve during two separate se- quences of bump signals; fone sequence is used for speed of response and over- shoot calculations. and the other is used for backlash/ stiction caleulations. The starting position can be any- where between 5% to 90% open. The system allows the technician to visually an lyze graphical data, and pro- vides an in-depth look at all measured data for each of five variables: valve shaft movement, 4-20 mA control signal, positioner shart movement, instrument signal and flow signal (ifavailabie). er Cer CoC Using a bump sequence of 1%, 2%, 5% and 10%. the control valve package is tested lor speed of response and overshoot. The system calculates the deadtime, firstorder and second-order ume constants (Id, 163 and ‘T98), The system then pre- sents information on how each variables ts operating. ‘The graphical data plots can be used to measure dead- time between signal and response, and can also be used (0 isolate possible causes for less-than- optimum performance. Additionally, results ean be used to measure time varia- tions between events on the graphical plots. A separate sequence of 16 individual bump signals is used to measure accuracy. The system graphs how each variable is operating, and completes the backlash and stiction calculations. ‘The performance of the I/P is measured by a separate pressure transducer, The YDS detects potential prob- Jems within this important component. ey ed Software System ‘The diagnostics software package is Windows based and contains pre- programmed test parame- ters and calculations. The diagnostics system allows selection of variables to be tested. Each valve can be tested for six important per- formance measurements: + valve shaft movernent +420 mA control signal * positioner shaft movernent + actuator pressures + instrument signal * flow signal (if available) ‘The system has input fields for all valve identification, location or other pertinent data, All necessary informa- tion Is calculated automaul- cally and can be viewed on-screen or printed on a convenient report page. Operating the VDS in moni- tor mode allows meastir- ment of valve response to Separate transducers mea- sure actuator port pressure. ‘These measurements are used to calculate actuator breakaway pressure. An increase in breakaway pres- ‘sure may indicate seat wear, scale build-up in the valve, or bearing degradation. Test results indicating torque requirements greater than measured previously indi cate when visual inspection of the vaive or actuator is required. SHBES SRoiy random signal changes gen- erated by the DCS system. In addition, the system can be driven by put signals which are generated by sep- arate (outside) signal gener ators, allowing vaive respon- siveness to be checked against signal changes of any characteristic.
