You realise that you have to also identify and target learners who are at risk for illegal drug use ‘The eastest and most economical way of domng this to usea questionnaire to identify learners at risk This will allow you to tatlor prevention programmes to fit the needs and ‘circumstances of these lamers ‘You consult academic iterature on the issue of drug abuse and the use of illegal drugs In the literature you come across ‘an interesting fact, namely that there 1s a correlation between alcohol abuse and the tendency to abuse other drugs or to use Mlegal drugs Thus information about learners’ use of alcohol could indicate whether or not they should be considered at risk for drug abuse im general You also notice that many of the publications refer to a particular theory that seems to explain how behaviour can be predicted You think the theory could be important because it could further help to predict whether somebody would actually begin to abuse drugs or use allegal drugs You search the literature for papers on ths theory, and come across two articles explaining what the authors refer to as ‘the theory of planned behaviour” According to the theory of planned behaviour there are psychological factors that can be used to predict whether or nota person will execute a particular form of behaviour Behaviour 1s linked to the intention to execute the behaviour The stronger the intention to exceute the behaviour the more likely a person 1s to actually execute the behaviour in question Three factors underlie the tntention to execute behaviour These factors are the person’ s attitude towards the behaviou histher subjective norm conceming the behaviour and his/her perceived control with regard to the behaviour Thus a person will form a strong mtention to act (execute a particular form of behaviour) if he/she feels positive about the behaviour (positive attitude), thinks the behaviour 1s socrally acceptable (posttive subjective norm) and that nothing stops Inver from executing the behaviour (positive control) You contact several test publishers and finally come across a questionnaire called the Alcohol use Intention ‘Questionnaire (AIQ) You order the questionnaire from the test publisher sn question When the AIQ arrives you are ready to assess the questionnaire Because you need a sctentifically valid and reliable mstrument you sit down to do a really thorough analysis of the questionnaire (B) and its test manual (C) You use 50 multiple chorce questions (D) to determine your assessment of the questionnatre [TURN OVER] 3 PYC2606 MAY/JUNE 2013 Questionnaire B Alcohol use Intention Questionnaire (AIQ) Instructions Please read the following questions carefully and indicate your response to each question by ticking the answer that best describes how you feel about the issues raised by each of these questions Most of these questions concern the use of alcohol Please answer all questions. Aim and design The Alcohol use Intention Questionnaire (A1Q) can be used to determine the level of a person's intention to use alcohol ‘The questionnaire 1s meant to be used ina preventive context ~ 1n other words, it should be used with individuals who have not been submitted to a treatment programme The aim 1s to wentify individuals who may be at risk of becoming, heavy drinkers ‘The AIQ 1s based on the theory of planned behaviour The theory of planned behaviour links the intention to execute behaviour with the actual execution of the behaviour Therefore the AIQ can be used to predict whether or nota person 1s, Iikely to abuse alcoho! According to the theory of planned behaviour there are psychological factors that can be used to predict whether or not a person will execute a particular form of behaviour Three factors underle the mtention to execute behaviour These factors are the person’s atitude towards the behaviour, hissher subjective norm concerning the behaviour and his/her perceived control with regard to the behaviour Thus a person will form a strong intention to act (execute a particular form of behaviour) if he/she feels positive about the behaviour (positive attitude), thinks the ‘behaviour is socially acceptable (positive subjective norm) and that nothmg stops hunv/her from executing the behaviour (positive control) 2. Properties of the AIQ ‘The A1Q was pilot tested in a drug abuse treatment clmic in Germany ‘Ten patients took part in the study The age of these patients ranged from 25 to 45, and the gender distribution was close {0 50% (6 male and 4 female) The results ‘obtained from the pilot study enabled the researchers to calculate the correlations between each of the items and the total scores ‘These correlations were used to discard weak items ‘Table | shows the scores obtained by each of the research partiespants for three of the items (questions I 9, 1 11 and 1 13) together with thetr total test scores. Recreation “001 0.04 10. {able 2 provides information about the eriterion related validity of the questionnaire The high values of the correlations between the pre-treatment scores and the post-ireatment results indicate a high degree of eriterion related validity. Thus the questionnaire can be used to prechet the impact ofa treatment programme ‘The questionnaire’s construct vaihdsty 1s supported by the information provided in Table 3 Here one can see that there 1S a fautly hugh correlation between attitude fowards alcohol consumption and a subjective norm reflecting soctal approval of alcohol consumption. This supports the 1dea that attitude and norm are two separate factors in the theory of planned behaviour ‘The table also shows that there 1s a negative correlation between involvement in recreation activities and the attitude and norm factors, which proves that recreation 15 not part of the theory of planned behaviour 3 Procedures for administration, scoring and snterpretation of the AIQ Adminstration Instructions for completing the questionnaire are given with the stems of the questionnaire m the AIQ Individuals respond on the questionnaire and need a pencil to do so. The questionnaire 1s a psychological test and this affects who 1s allowed to administer, seore and interpret the questionnaire Respondents should be mstructed to answer the questionnaire honestly. Words may be explained but respondents should not be guided towards a specific answer Sconng Note that some stems require reversed scoring Scores should be assigned 1n a manner that reflects higher scores for a positive attitude towards alcohol use, and higher scores for a subjective norm im favour of aleohol use For example, agreement with the statement “think drinking 1s relaxing” (Item | 1) reflects a positive attitude towards drinking agree strongly” receives 5 marks, and “disagree strongly’ receives | mark) However, agreement with the statement “Getting drunk 1s undesirable” (Item | 2) mdicates a negative attitude Therefore ftem | 2 requires reversed scoring in which agree strongly” gets 1 mark and “disagree strongly” gets 5 marks Interpretation Norm tables are provided for determining a person’s alcohol abuse nish inden he norm tables assocrate the scores that people obtain on the AIQ with a five point risk scale, ranging from very high risk to very low risk To determine a person’s alcohol abuse risk index Add his/her attitude and notm scores, and subtract his/her recreational score from this sum Use the person’s age and gender information to select the relevant norm table, and compare hivher obtained AIQ score with the scores listed in the norm table The risk index 1s the index associated with the matching score m the norm, table Individuals with hugh and very hugh risk indices should be targeted by preventative and treatment program End of manu: [TURN OVER} 9 PYC2606 MAY/JUNE 2013 Examination questions D Question 1 What ts the content domain represented by thes questionnaire? 1 Wentification of substance abusers 2.
