1. meager (adj) = small in amount, e.g. “Every morning he eats a meager breakfast of
toast and coffee.”
2. pave the way (phr) = something that makes another thing possible, e.g. “They're
trying to blast away the hill to pave the way for the new apartment.”
3. have a say (phr) = to be involved in making a decision about something, e.g.
“Everyone should have a say in deciding on the annual dinner venue.”
4. preposterous (adj) = very silly or mindless, e.g. “My friend came up with a
preposterous idea.”
5. companionable (adj) = friendly and pleasant to be with, e.g. “I just realised how
companionable he is.”
6. sprawling (adj) = spreading out over a large area in an untidy or irregular way, “The
children were sprawling on the floor to watch their favourite television programme.”
7. in accordance with (phr) = in a way that agrees with or follows (something, such as a
rule or request), e.g. “In accordance with your request, I have conducted the survey.”
8. spring up (phr) = to start to exist suddenly, e.g. “A number of online classes are
starting to spring up.”
9. to the fore (phr) = to become important or popular, e.g. “She has always been to the
fore at moments of crisis.”
10. sublime (adj) = extremely good, beautiful, or enjoyable, e.g. “After the sublime meal,
they were truly satisfied.”
