Mumbai (MCGM) has constructed the Middle Vaitarna Dam on Vaitarana River in year 2014 which is
now known as “Hindu Hriday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray Middle Vaitarna Dam. The dam site is
approximately 30 kms away from Igatpuri Railway station in Palghar District Maharashtra. The latitude of
site is 19.721723° and longitude 73.468533°.
Vaitarna River is west flowing river originating from Sahyadri ranges. It is one of the major sources of
water supply to Mumbai city. The river potential had already been partly harnessed by constructing two
storage dams across the river viz. Upper Vaitarna dam and Lower Vaitarna Dam i.e. Modak Sagar dam. The
two dams are situated 42 km apart. After seeking various clearances for the Middle Vaitarna Project the
Project was launched in 2009.
Under the Middle Vaitarna Water Supply Project of MCGM, a Dam of 101 m in height and 500 m is length
was constructed on Vaitarna River at village Kochale, Tal. Mokhada, Dist. Palghar. The storage capacity of the
dam is about 202 MCM of water and utilizing to meet the drinking water requirements of Mumbai city. The
Middle Vaitarna Dam construction work was completed in the year 2014.On completion of Middle Vaitarna
Project the water supply to Mumbai stands at 3850 MLD.
1090 MLD Water from Middle Vaitarna Dam is released into the Modak Sagar Lake in a controlled
manner, from where it will be drawn for treatment and onward supply to the city. The FSL of M.V. reservoir is
285 m (MSL) and the MDDL is 220 m (MSL). Middle Vaitarna reservoir offers a potential site for hydropower
generation due to the storage as well as the availability of hydraulic head. Release from the reservoir can be
routed through the proposed powerhouse located at the toe of the dam.
As part of Energy Security program of Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM), the MCGM
intends to Develop Renewable power sources like Hydro Electric Power Plant and Floating Solar Plants in
and around the water reservoirs owned / controlled and maintain by them in order to harness Green energy.
Existing Infrastructure available at Dam Site is as follows-
: Penstock, ( water tunnel of 3.5 m dia )
: Discharge valve to river
: Dead flange fitted at the 'Y' point for the connectivity to Hydro power inlet.
