Soliloquy is a literary device where a person talks to himself without

acknowledging the presence of any other person. It helps to reveal the

innermost, intention of the character. It connects past to the present
situation and gives us an idea about the future.

The first soliloquy of Doctor Faustus starts with a sense of optimism and
determination. We get an idea about Faustus’s optimistic and determine
characteristics. He is in his study room thinking about different sectors
of knowledge which will bring him ultimate power and honour. He
looked into philosophy, medicine, law, theology but he thinks there is no
miracle in these subjects rather than limitation. So he wants to open a
new domain of knowledge with an unconventional topic, necromancy.
He thought by practising necromancy he will be a demi-god.
