Analyzing Dashas - Methodology

Step 1:
Examine the condition and position of the mahādaśā and antardaśā lords in both the rāśi and
navāmśa. With regards to position, see the placement from both the birth lagna and the Moon
(Chandra lagna).

Favorable Conditions: (a) exalted, mūlatrikoṇa, own sign, Great Friend or Friend's sign (b) position from the
lagna is (a) in an angle house (b) in a trine house (c) in houses 2 or 11

Unfavorable Conditions: (a) debilitated without effective cancellation, in the sign of a Great Enemy or Enemy,
combust without compensation, defeated in a planetary war, in a rāśi sandhi or gandanta (b) position from the
lagna is (a) in houses 6, 8, 12 (c) in the 3rd house (only mildly unfavorable and good for some things) (d) in houses
2, 7 (these being māraka houses, but these placements are only unfavorable from this standpoint should a
person's ayus be expiring)

Step 2:
Examine the mahādaśā and antardaśā lords for any sources of strength beyond the planet's
dignity.

Favorable Conditions: (a) vargottama (b) directional strength (Jupiter and Mercury in the 1st, Moon and Venus
in the 4th, Saturn in the 7th, Sun and Mars in the 10th (c) parivartana (d) has a good dignity in the navāmśa such
as exaltation, mūla- trikoṇa or own sign, or being in an exchange (parivartana yoga) in D-9. (e) has a good dignity
in a large number of divisional charts. The most important this way are D-3, D-9, and D-60.

Step 3:
Examine the mutual positions of the current mahādaśā lord (MDL) and antardaśā lord (ADL).

(a) From the MDL, if the ADL is in an angle or trine it is a positive point.
(b) From the MDL, if the ADL is in 6, 8, or 12 it can be a negative point.

Step 4:
Examine the association between the mahādaśā and antardaśā lords.

(a) mutual exchange (parivartana yoga) (b) conjunction (c) mutual aspect (d) aspect from dispositor (Example: Mars in
Sagittarius aspected by Jupiter)

Step 5
Note the association by exchange, conjunction or aspect of any other planet to the mahādaśā lord
and antardaśā lords. See whether they are natural benefics or malefics and whether their
lordships are auspicious or inauspicious. Note whether these combinations form any significant
yogas.

Step 6:
Make a preliminary assessment of the period by classifying it according to one of the following five
categories:

Very Favorable, Favorable, Mixed, Unfavorable, Very Unfavorable

Step 7:
Summary

Step 1: See the condition and the house placement of the daśā and antardaśā lords in rāśi and navāmśa both from the
lagna and the Moon.
Step 2: See their strength or weakness.
Step 3: See their mutual position to each other.
Step 4: See the degree of association with each other.
Step 5: See their association with other planets and participation in planetary yogas.
Step 6: Characterize the period in a general way on a favorableness scale.
Step 7: Draw inferences based on synthesizing the meanings of the planets, signs, and houses, along with what has
been discerned from steps 1-6.
