Class Profile:

20 young teenagers (12 females/8 males), age: 13-14, intermediate, 6-7 years of English learning 8 hours a
week. L1 is Mandarin.

Aims: Learn new vocabulary and compare contrast of five short stories. Fluency development through Skill
focus.

Skills focus:
1) Skimming to get general theme of each story (gist)
2) Scanning for answers from scattered questions (scanning)
3) Read for details to identify contrast for each story by events and compare 5 story flows
(fill the questions remain in sequence)
4) Guess/teach new vocabulary

Assumed knowledge: All tenses and Wh-questions.

Anticipated Problem: 5 different stories may be confusing with reach other when read all at once.

Solution: Pause reading to check comprehension between stories when skimming for gist.
