PLUMBING INSPECTOR
NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work in securing compliance with ordinances and regulations
governing existing and new plumbing installations.
Work involves the responsibility for performance of both field and office tasks in
carrying out the municipal plumbing inspection program requirements. All work
requires the knowledge of plumbing methods and practices and is controlled largely by
ordinance provisions and standard practices within the limits of which inspectors must
use considerable independent judgment and discretion. Work also involves the
performance of inspection tasks in other construction fields as work loads in the
department require. Work is normally subject only to general supervision, but may be
reviewed by superiors in cases involving issuance of plumbing permits or controversial
enforcement cases. All work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief
Building Official.
EXAMPLES OF WORK

examples include all duties that may be found in positions of this class.)
Inspects plumbing installations during construction and examines completed
installations for code compliance and use of proper material.
Reviews plans submitted by plumbing contractors; approves plans; recommends
or orders changes in material or design of plumbing work; issues permits.
Reviews mechanical plans for compliance with codes that are applicable to
plumbing systems.
Makes air tests of completed installations for leaks following the construction
process.
Assists and advises plumbers, contractors and others regarding plumbing
regulations.
Inspects plumbing installation work in process to insure that contractual
personnel have appropriate licenses.
Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
Graduation from standard high school or vocational school; considerable
experience as a skilled plumber or plumbing contractor.
Possession of a Minnesota state license as a Journeyman Plumber;
Possession of valid Minnesota driver’s license; must provide own appropriate
transportation.
