Technological advances in laser cutting or 3D printing have opened new design possibilities
for aesthetic appearance, weave graphics and manufacturing. Not only great for creative
freedom and easier experimentation, digitally-infused manufacturing methods reduce
building constraints and, depending on the material used, give any creation visual structural
integrity. We expect to see digitisation revolutionise production processes, eliminating
L_WLUZP]L[VVSPUNJVZ[ZHKKPUNÅL_PIPSP[`[VLUHISLOPNOSL]LSZVMJ\Z[VTPZH[PVUHUK
allowing much faster design alteration.
Developing an underlying structure and applying materials is going to become one
process to merge form and function. Digital Light Synthesis (DLS), developed by Silicon
=HSSL`ÄYT*HYIVUPZ\ZLKMVY[OLZVSLZVM[OL-\[\YLJYHM[+Y\UUPUNZOVLZBYPNO[D;OPZ
technique uses light to shape a specially developed liquid resin that has elastic properties,
then heat to set the material. Unlike 3D printing, which uses solid plastic, the DLS process
employs a liquid polymer – shaped by natural elements – to give a lighter, more comfortable

The repurposing loop


Repurposing gives material waste a second life, and combining existing natural products

Dutch Design Week 2019
At DDW19 (Eindhoven, the Netherlands, 19-27 October), many of the artists’ exhibits were on display in the city’s repurposed industrial
I\PSKPUNZ)LÄ[[PUN[OPZTHU`HPTLK[V[HJRSL[OLX\LZ[PVUHIV\[OV^[VTHRLZTHY[\ZLVMYLZV\YJLZ0[PZL_OPSHYH[PUN[VZLLHYL[OPURPUNPU
sustainable future products that echoes the urgency being felt across design education, industry and the customer base alike. Renewable
and recycled materials, repurposed waste and biomaterials bring their own aesthetics to the design world.

Linescapes
The textile art studio Fault Lines, founded by Matthias de Vogel in 2015, experiments
with traditional ideas of textile art and reinterprets them in a new way. Linescapes are
handwoven panels of tactile depth, with bold graphics in grids and geometric structures.
These compositions are inspired by the beauty and richness of weaving techniques from
craftspeople in India, Morocco, Turkey, New Mexico, Japan and Scandinavia.

Comfort Zones

cover, to form knitted structures and materials and appear soothing and comfortable. The
elasticity of the knit shows graphically over the volumes in a decorative way in, for example,
furniture applications.

Interactive dining table


The social experience of sitting together is graphically enhanced by this table with its
embedded load cells and LED lights. The load cells respond in colour and brightness to
weight shifts on the table top, and the table records and interprets the behaviour of, and
social interactions between, those seated there. It was created by a team at the University
of Twente as part of a personalised e-health technology research programme.

Waste No More
US fashion label Eileen Fisher started a take-back programme in 2009 as part of a circular
system designed to preserve the value of clothes at every stage, in any condition. Over 1.2
million garments have since been collected, and pieces beyond repair become raw material
for Waste No More (WNM). Led by creative director Sigi Ahl, the WNM studio transforms
damaged clothes into one-of-a-kind artworks, pillows, wall hangings and accessories using
a custom felting technique that requires no water or dyes.

Woven Braids
Polish-born, Delft-based designer Aleksandra Gaca (who created the interior fabrics
for the Renault Symbioz concept car) has channelled her research into braid patterns,
constructions and traditional textile techniques into a new series of fabrics titled Woven
)YHPKZ;OLZL]HY`MYVT+^V]LUHJV\Z[PJ[L_[PSLZ[VÅH[MHIYPJZ\ZLKMVY[LH[V^LSZ"[OL`
are woven with sustainable yarns and manufactured in the TextielLab, Tilburg.

Foamation
French-American designer Steven Akoun’s glass foam is created with sustainable materials
such as recycled glass and uses eggshells as a mineral foaming agent. The result is a
stunning lightweight structure which, as wall tiles, has sound-absorbing characteristics.

Sketching, VR data reviews and design development activities were carried out at

Two themes based on the theme of ‘living space’ were developed: both took
furniture, rather than conventional automotive interior components, as the main
inspiration for forms, materials and details. The chosen design, however, went further
in terms of how the furniture “seemed to be placed in space, rather than in a vehicle”,
says SangYup Lee. “We approached ‘living space’ as a main concept of spatial
composition, not just as a stylistic motif.”
The team looked to achieve a friendly interior ambience. “I thought about the
things we consider when choosing furniture,” says SangYup Lee. “The elements
required long-term eye contact, harmony, and optimised arrangements for families to
communicate comfortably.”
A wraparound architecture maximises the sense of space, sweeping around the
cockpit, and the armchair-like seats feature integral armrests; there is no large centre

electric powertrain. The seats rotate for sociability – the 45 theoretically has self-driving

Exterior and interior were modelled together on the same studio plate. The interior
architecture follows a consistent form language, described as “constructivist modular”
by Alan Sheppard (pictured, left). Sheppard started at Land Rover in 1984 and worked
on the original CB40 Freelander 1 with Gerry McGovern. “Some of the [Defender]
ideas relate back to CB40,” says Sheppard. “On that car, we explored ideas for paring

says Jean-Baptiste Trollé, Faurecia industrial design director, Asia. “The new seating trend
we are seeing is to larger, more heavy and complex seating: seats which can rotate, turning
the seat inwards. Faurecia is working on the development of safety systems around that
[new motion] so the airbags will be integrated into the seat as well as the seatbelts. We
already have this working.”

and positioning of the seats themselves continue to develop too. The rear seats of the
Faraday Future FF 91 [top] achieve a 60-degree reclining angle, said to be the greatest-yet in
any production vehicle, and 14-way adjustment with four-way lumbar support. These NASA-
inspired ‘zero gravity’ seats give a so-called neutral posture for optimum ergonomics and
distribution of body weight: biomechanical factors which promise to enhance long-distance
comfort and relaxation.
New challenges are involved in designing these relaxing environments. As Faurecia’s
Jean-Baptiste Trollé notes, “in an autonomous world, where you have a driver lying back,
possibly sleeping, the important consideration is ‘how do you get someone prepared to drive
in a calm way, with no panic?’ We are using sound, light, smell, vibration, and are working to
design these scenarios in.”

Nissan is confronting the challenge of new technologies, powertrains and business


models on multiple fronts with its Intelligent Mobility initiative, and a constituent part of
this is establishing a new design language. Embodying traditional Japanese design
sensibilities, this is combined with a view toward emerging technologies that will

Executive design director Satoru Tai explains: “Nissan’s new design philosophy
centres on a Japanese minimal approach, to accent advanced technology that blends
seamlessly into our cars and a customer’s lifestyle. These serve as key elements in what
we call ‘timeless Japanese futurism.’ A minimal approach mainly refers to the physical
form – such as our concept’s simple, yet striking exterior shape. These seamless
expressions display the potential of electric vehicles and future driving technology in a
distinctly Japanese way.”

Fundamental to Nissan’s new design language are the concepts of iki and ma. Ma
is an ancient Japanese concept that denotes space but also time; it has no direct
Western equivalent, and multiple meanings at technical, artistic, and cultural levels.
The word is sometimes translated as emptiness; not in the sense of a lack, or poverty,
but rather as potential and scope for opportunity. Iki is a more recent construct which

is worldly, but not obsessively materialistic. Mitsuki Nishikawa, design manager at

Both these concepts feed into the idea of ‘timeless Japanese futurism’, and the
ÄYZ[H\[VTV[P]LL_WYLZZPVUVM[OPZPZ[OL04RHYLPTHNPULKºkei’ car. The kei (short for
keijidoshi, or ‘light automobile’) is a class of car unique to Japan, originally created by
its government in 1949 to help the country transition from motorcycles to cars, and
YLI\PSKWVZ[^HY6]LY[OL`LHYZZPUJLLѝJPLU[kei cars – strictly limited in size and
engine power – have been remarkable platforms for innovation.
“We needed to reset how we design, because the way these vehicles are powered
and used have changed,” says Satoru Tai. “EV [electric vehicle] technology is here, and
[OLLU[PYLTPUKZL[¶HYJOP[LJ[\YL[VUVPZL¶PZX\P[LKPќLYLU[[OHUMVYH[YHKP[PVUHSPU[LYUHS

The doors are an interesting juxtaposition of vertical and horizontal elements, inspired
by Japanese kigumi carpentry and woodworking. At the lower door, a series of vertical
slats suggests a fence or an abstract forest that rises from the carpet below. Above

Karma Automotive, now owned by the Wangxiang Group, made a bold statement at
the Shanghai auto show with its SC1 Vision Concept, a dramatic roadster previewing
the evolution in design language for the brand. Its design drew inspiration from Karma’s
California home: its climate, its culture, the glamour of Hollywood, the dynamics of surf
and hot-rod culture, and the state’s heritage of innovation in both the aerospace and
automotive sectors all found a place in the styling of the SC1.
