Discrimination

❖ Asian community in Uganda in 1972

➢ Background
■ In August 1972, President of Uganda, Idi Amin, order the expulsion of
Asian minorities in the country, giving them 90 days to leave
■ There was a lot of Indophobia in the country at the time, as they were
blamed for disloyalty to Uganda, non-integration, and commercial
malpractice
■ 80,000 people of Indian descent lived in Uganda at the time, 23,000 of
whom were accepted as citizens. Though these 23,000 people were
later exempted from the expulsion, a lot of them voluntarily left anyway
■ Amin defended his actions by saying that he was “giving Uganda back
to ethnic Ugandans”
➢ Effect of the Asian population on Uganda’s economy
■ After the Asians in Uganda left the country and moved to the UK, a lot
of the jobs they held (agricultural, commercial) were left unfilled
■ Large decrease in economic production, a lot of people were killed
under Amin’s rule
❖ Glowork - Jobs for Women in Saudi-Arabia
➢ Creating bridges between women who are looking for jobs in Saudi Arabia
and employers, as culturally it is difficult for women to find jobs
❖ “cultural or religious norms may block the role of women… leaving half the population
without economic or political rights and without education, thereby undermining half
of the population in its contribution to overall development.”- Jeffrey Sachs
❖ Discrimination prevents countries from reaching their full potential as they are
providing for people who are not allowed to contribute what they can to the economy
