Sloss’ Cratonic Sequences

Very large-scale lithostratographic

sequence that covers a complete
marine transgressive-regressive
cycle across a craton.
These sequences are bounded by
major unconformities and were
defined onshore.

Sedimentary sequences
What is a sequence?
• Sloss (1949): a stratigraphic unit
bounded by large-magnitude,
regional unconformities.
• Mitchum et al., (1977): a
stratigraphic unit composed
of a relatively conformable
succession of strata bounded at its
top and bottom by unconformities
or correlative conformities.

Seismic data
Isochrones
• Seismic reflections are generated
by physical surface (reflectors) in
the medium.
• For sedimentary accumulations,
these are mainly stratal surface
and unconformities with
volocities-density contrasts.
• Reflections can be consider to
represent time-equivalent
surfaces.
