The University of Edinburgh | WK2 CHARACTERISATION - Introduction (2018 version)

Generally speaking, the novels you read will be filled with characters. There may be lots of them, almost too many
to keep track of. Or, there might be very few. The plot could, for instance, trace the lives of a whole village, but

only focus in on one family.

But how do we learn about these characters, or get to know them? Well, often it's the same way we get to know
the people we meet in real life. On a superficial level, when we're first introduced. And it's through the way they

dress, their initial demeanour, and their speech patterns. But gradually, as we get to know them better, it's also

through their behaviour, how they treat other people and other character's feelings about them.

This section of the course will take you through some of the key ways in which character is revealed to us, starting

from the outside in. The aspects you notice first at an initial encounter, to those qualities that require a little more
patience before they're fully disclosed.
