“As God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion,

“Sing to the Lord a new song because he has done wonderful things!” -
Psalm 98:1
When the Psalmist imagined the world giving praise to God, they imagined
each thing praising in its own way: the sea roaring, the earth breaking out
into harmony, the waves of the ocean clapping against the shore. Each thing
does what it does, in its own way, to praise God.
And the people? The people do what people do. They raise their voices in song, they make
music with harps and horns.
When we praise from the heart, our doxology lifts us up out of the mire of circumstances and
struggle, so we can remember who we really are: beloved children of the God of Love and
Grace. We are made to praise – and not just in good times! Praise is a ladder for our spirits, a
gift to help us climb up out of the shadows and into the light to get a new perspective on
things, if only briefly. Praise brings us back in touch with the truth of our situation: Praise
God from whom all blessings flow...
We can and should sing the old, familiar songs, of course, like the Doxology and so many
others. But in times like these, we have to sing them in new ways, just as our ancestors did.
We may not be singing together in the same physical space for some time to come – and so
we have to find new ways of singing, “new songs” to sing, new forms of praise and thanks
and delight – new ways of being the church, of being God’s people, “together for joy” (Ps
98:8).
But of course that’s not all people do to praise their Creator. We don’t just make music for
God; we imitate God as well. And for Christians, the thing that God is best known for is
love, a love that pours itself out in generosity and grace. There are lots of ways to imitate
God in that, and one of them is upon us now.
Over the next few weeks, we will be walking through the Psalms, looking at how our
ancestors sang to God in a variety of circumstances. In addition to looking back, we will
examine the present, to see where God has been actively generous and loving, and we will
look toward the future.
As we embark on our 2021 Stewardship Campaign, we rejoice that we, just as the Psalm
says, are “together for joy” once more. We’re asking you to prayerfully consider what God’s
hopes are for our congregation in the year to come, and how your 2021 giving will make you
part of this church’s great outpouring of generosity.
We have been amazed at the way you all have continued to financially support the church in
these difficult times. I truly believe that, if we can make it through this, we can make it
through anything. And I’m glad to be along for the ride.
Peace-
Pastor Leigh

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN SYNOD PROJECT FOR 2020
The synod project, chosen by the Beaver/Butler Presbyterian
women, is The Lighthouse Foundation, transitional housing. The
Lighthouse is the largest food pantry in Butler County and is the
sole provider of transitional and interim housing for young adults
with no support or place to live, foster care kids who have aged out,
or young adults who can’t live at home. They may stay for 18 months. The money we collect
helps to expand their programs to provide education, classes in finance and parenting, and help
finding a job. Every house has a resident manager who counsels and helps hold the clients
accountable. As the sponsoring presbytery we need to lead the way to help raise the $20,000
money for the grant.
We are asking you to be generous in your giving to help these young adults get a good start in
life by making a contribution to the Lighthouse Foundation transitional housing program. You
may send your check to our church office and put in the memo line, Synod Project for PW.
Thank you from Hill PW Officers, Bea Welch, President, Sherry Neely, Secretary,
Ruth Scott, Treasurer, and Audrey Nossokoff, Member at Large.
Dear Friends,
With our return to sanctuary worship, we are again adorning the chancel with fresh flower
arrangements, as is the tradition at Hill. If you have signed up to donate flowers, either while
the building was closed or during the remainder of 2020, you will be contacted individually
to discuss your desires and options.
There is one significant change concerning the flowers after worship. Due to concerns
related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Deacons’ ministry will no longer include the
delivery of chancel flowers to members at home or to any residential facility. If you have
donated flowers, they will be left for you to take after worship. If you are comfortable doing
so, perhaps consider making a surprise, socially distanced front porch flower drop-off to
brighten someone’s day. Alternately, you may call the church office to indicate you will not
be taking them. In this case, the worship committee will be notified, and we will attempt to
have these flowers bring joy to others.
