As 1 proud fourth-generation Floridian, I have seen first-hand the impact that hurricanes can have on our businesses and communities. Afier every storm, we have come back better and stronger. Early on September 16, 2020, Hurricane Sally made land fall in Florida’s Panhandle as a Category 2 Hurricane that caused catastrophic flooding and massive storm surge. This was exactly 16 years to the day since Hurricane Ivan devastated Pensacola in 2004. In the Sunshine State, we pride ourselves on making necessary preparations before, every storm. According to media reports, 20-plus barges came loose during Hurricane Sally with more than half washing ashore on public property. In addition, the Pensacola Bay Bridge, which connects Pensacola to the City of Gulf Breeze, was struck by a barge and is now closed to traffic as the Florida Department of Transportation assesses the damage and makes repairs. With the citizens of Northwest Florida still reeling from the storm, the last thing the hard-working men and women of Pensacola need is massive barges causing additional property damage after your company failed to secure them. {As Florida’s CFO, and the insurer of state property, I am committed to holding companies like ‘Skanska liable for negligent action that damages state property. For this reason, I have directed my Division of Risk Management to assess whether any state property, covered by Risk, was damaged as a result of the unsecured barges, and take action against ‘Skanska as needed. Moreover, I look forward to your response as to what preventive measures are in place to ensure Skanska’s equipment is safe and secure and does not negatively impact Florida’s infrastructure, property, or environment.
