Fall Semester, 2020 – 21 CLE1004 – Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Digital Assignment - I
1. Explain the phenomenon capillarity (capillary zones) in soil with neat sketch and also derive the formulae to find the capillary rise. (02)
2. Explain the following with neat sketch: (03)
(a) Shrinkage and swelling of soils; (b) Slaking of clay
3. Determine the average coefficient of permeability in the horizontal and vertical
directions for a deposit consisting of three layers of thickness 5 m, 1 m and 2.5 m and having the coefficients of permeability of 3 x 10-2 mm/sec, 3 x 10-5 mm/sec and 4 x 10-2 mm/sec respectively. Assume the layers are isotropic. (02)
4. A rectangular foundation 3 m x 2.1 m is perfectly flexible and carries a load of 300
kN/m2. Determine the vertical pressure at a depth of 5 m below a point P shown in Figure below. (03)
