The difference between broad-spectrum and narrow spectrum is that the broad-spectrum are drugs that

are effective against a variety of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. In contrast, the narrow
spectrum is drugs that are effective against only gram-positive bacteria. The positive side of broad
antimicrobial agents is that they can be effective against a wide variety of bacteria. But the negative
effect also has its positive side. Since it affects a wide range, it also harms the normal flora we have.
These normal florae are the ones that help us prevent certain bacteria from reaching our body without
them; certain microorganisms can easily invade our body and harm us. The positive side of the narrow
spectrum is that it is specific to attack a particular microorganism. It strikes what is to be attacked, but
does not harm other organisms. The negative effect is that a combination of therapy if several species of
pathogen identified, then the side effects may be more severe.
