LESSON : WAYS OF EXPRESSING FUTURE

TYPE OF LESSON: teaching grammar

TEXTBOOK: Upstream Pre-Intermediate

TIME: 50’

OBJECTIVES:

a) cognitive objectives

By the end of the class, students will be able :

-to differentiate among four forms of the future tense


-to classify situations and examples according to the forms of future tense
-to make predictions
-to put verbs into correct future forms

b) affective objectives:

- to create a warm atmosphere as background for smooth and easy exchange of opinions
between teacher and students;
- to make students confident in the ability to use language

TEACHING AIDS: textbook , blackboard , handouts, video player

SKILLS: speaking, listening, reading, writing

ORGANIZATION: lockstep, individual and group-work

ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: Some students may have difficulty in understanding four


different future forms right from the beginning.

SOLUTION TO THE ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS: Raising the awareness through the


various activities developed during the class.

ASSUMPTIONS: The Ss already handle a satisfying level of language in order to


accomplish the requests of the lesson.

Stages of the lesson

Activity 1: Warm-up

Aim:- to create the atmosphere for the lesson


Procedure: T greets Ss, checks attendance and homework
Interaction: T-Ss
Timing: 5’
Skills: speaking

Activity 2: Lead-in

Aims: -to stir their interest


-to introduce the topic
Procedure: T initiates a discussion about horoscope and fortune telling. Do you believe in
fortune telling? T role plays the “fortune teller”. Ss volunteer to have their future told. T and
Ss play the “chatterbox” or “paper fortune teller” in order to learn about predictions. Ss get
acquainted with the will + infinitive future form in a funny way.
E.g.: You will run for the next President of the U.S
You will be hungry in an hour.
You will travel to China and meet Jackie Chan etc.
Interaction: T-Ss, role play
Timing: 7’

Activity 3: Presentation of the new material

Aims: -to understand every form of future


-to differentiate every use of the future form
Procedure: T writes a cross on the blackboard eliciting from the Ss the four future forms:
Will+ infinitive, Going to + infinitive, Present Simple and Present Continuous.
T gives strips of paper with sentences written on it. (See Appendix 1)
Ss discover by themselves, in pairs, each and every use of the future form by sticking the
sentences in the corresponding square at the blackboard. After seeing the common elements in

the sentences from each square, T sticks on the blackboard four coloured squares of paper
with future form usages. (See Appendix 2) Ss write in their notebooks.

Activity 4: Practice activity

Aims: -to practise every form of future in given contexts


-to foster understanding of the new grammar structure
Procedure: T asks Ss to open their textbooks and do exercise 9, page 61, first individually,
then together with the whole class.
Interaction: IW, T-Ss
Timing: 10’
Skills: writing, speaking

Activity 5: Practice for consolidation

Aims: -to foster learning through sentences of their own


-to stimulate students’imagination and creativity
Procedure: Stop and predict activity. T shows three ads to the Ss, stops the videos at one point
and Ss have to predict what follows.

Activity 6: Homework assignment

Aim: to practise the information acquired during the class


Procedure: Exercise VI, page 81.
Interaction: T-Ss, Ss-T
